Tonda Eckert has got Southampton in good form ahead of a clash with struggling West Brom
  • West Brom have not won in 2026 and are just one place above the drop zone

  • Southampton are unbeaten in nine, winning their last three matches

  • Recommended bet: Draw

West Brom host Southampton at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night knowing failure to win could see them drop into the Championship’s bottom three.

The Baggies, who have been in freefall after failing to record a single victory this calendar year, face a Saints side who have not lost in nine.

Team news

West Brom defender Chris Mepham is out until the end of the month with a hamstring issue while Karlan Grant has been sidelined until May.

Tammer Bany is unavailable for the hosts due to a thigh problem.

The Baggies continue to miss Mikey Johnston, who had recorded nine assists when he was ruled out for the season after suffering a stress fracture to his leg.

Southampton defender Mads Roerslev is out with a knee injury, while left-back Welington is unavailable for the rest of March due to a muscle problem.

Young forward Jay Robinson, who turns 19 at the weekend, is a doubt.

The stats

West Brom defender George Campbell scored an own goal and the equaliser in his side’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.

Southampton have scored a total of 14 goals in their last five Championship matches.

The Baggies have lost three of their last four home league matches against Southampton, dating back to 2018 when the sides met in the Premier League.

The Saints have won eight of their last 10 league games against West Brom.

West Brom have not won at home so far in 2026 (drawing two and losing three).

Albion last went this long without a win at the start of a calendar year in 2003, failing to win any of the first nine games at the Hawthorns.

Prediction

The predicament West Brom are in, sitting just one place above the Championship drop zone with two months of the campaign remaining, they would have wanted an easier fixture than taking on Southampton.

The Saints travel to The Hawthorns high on confidence after knocking Premier League Fulham out of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Southampton are unbeaten in nine across all competitions, winning six of their last eight league matches, and will be a tough challenge for a Baggies side who have been floundering and are without a win in 2026.

Dismissing Eric Ramsay after just 44 days, West Brom have appointed club icon James Morrison as head coach, who will know the importance of keeping the Baggies in the second tier.

As the stark reality of the situation sets in, fans will rally further still and The Hawthorns could be key to West Brom’s survival chances.

After battling for a draw at Sheffield United on Saturday, the Baggies’ home advantage could be enough to hold Southampton too.

At this stage, every point will count.
