  • Watford have lost only four of their 20 home league games this season

  • Chalton have been successful in only four of 20 away Championship games this term

  • Recommended bet: Watford to win

Watford's 2-1 loss at QPR on Friday has left the Hornets nine points away from the top-six positions, but with play-off rivals Wrexham and Southampton meeting on Tuesday night, there is a chance for the Hertfordshire side to close the gap.

It has been another season of change for the Golden Boys, who turned to Ed Still after Javi Gracia left the club, but it could still be a successful campaign if they can reach the play-offs.

Charlton eased their relegation fears with two huge wins over Birmingham and Middlesbrough last month, but there is still more to do for the Addicks to ensure their safety and the south Londoners will be targeting points on the short trip north.

Team news

Watford have a lengthy injury list with Othmane Maamma, Jeremy Ngakia, Hector Kyprianou, Stephen Mfuni, Pierre Dwomoh and Rocco Vata all out.

Key performers Imran Louza, Luca Kjerrumgaard and Giorgi Chakvetadze should be in the starting line-up, but James Abankwah and Marc Bola are struggling after missing Friday's loss at Loftus Road.

Charlton welcomed Harvey Knibbs and Matty Godden back to the matchday squad for Friday's 2-1 loss against Bristol City, while Luke Berry is also closing in on a return from injury.

Reece Burke, Josh Edwards and Collins Sichenje remain sidelined for the visitors and Charlie Kelman and Lyndon Dykes are once again expected to lead the line.

The stats

Watford have lost only four of 20 home Championship matches this season and only Coventry, Millwall and Ipswich have won more second-tier home fixtures than the Hornets this season.

The Hornets have lost only one of their last seven Vicarage Road matches against Charlton.

Charlton have won just four of 20 league away games this term and are averaging only 0.9 goals per game in Championship matches on the road.

Only Hull and Sheffield Wednesday are putting up a weaker expected goal difference than Charlton's -15.30.

Prediction

Watford can keep their play-off hopes alive by beating Charlton at Vicarage Road.

Friday's 2-1 loss at QPR was a blow for the Golden Boys, but the Hornets have lost only four of their 20 Championship matches in Hertfordshire this season and they are tough to beat on their own patch.

QPR, Hull, Birmingham, Wrexham and Derby have all been beaten at Vicarage Road this season and only Millwall, Ipswich and Coventry have won more home second-tier games than the Hornets this term.

Charlton have won only two of their last 14 away games and one of those victories was a mighty fortunate 1-0 win at Middlesbrough, where the Addicks lost the shot count 34-5 and gave up 78 per cent possession.

Avoiding relegation would be a good achievement for Nathan Jones’ men this term.

However, Charlton are putting up expected goals numbers which have the south Londoners as one of the weakest three teams in the division and that is likely to show on Monday.
