Southampton are less than two weeks away from facing Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals, but they have three important Championship matches to focus on in the meantime, starting with a key clash against Blackburn at St Mary’s on Tuesday.

Fixtures are coming thick and fast for Tonda Eckert’s side, but there have been no signs of player fatigue.

Saints have one of the deeper squads in the second tier and have put it to good use as they strive to stay relevant in the race for automatic promotion.

Eighteen players have had minutes across Southampton’s last two Championship games but there were no signs of a drop off in performance with the south-coast side winning 5-1 at Wrexham and 2-1 at home to Derby.

Southampton will aim for another three points, although they will have full respect for Blackburn, who are fighting hard to retain second-tier status.

Rovers went five games undefeated with Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke, but they remain at risk with just four points separating them from the relegation places.

Team news

Southampton have had a busy schedule but they seem to be maintaining a reasonably clean bill of health.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (wrist) and defender Mads Roerslev (knee) are their only senior players on the sidelines.

Blackburn are depleted with Lewis Miller, Sondre Tronstad (both knee), Scott Wharton, Hayden Carter, Matty Litherland (all hamstring), Ryan Hedges (broken leg), Augustus Kargbo (calf), George Pratt and Andri Gudjohnsen (both thigh) on their injured list.

However, Eirin Cashin shook off a groin strain to play the full game in Saturday’s fixture at Stoke.

The stats

Southampton have won nine of their last 10 fixtures.

Saints have opened the scoring in 10 of their last 12 matches.

Southampton have scored two or more goals in seven of their last 10 fixtures.

Blackburn have scored under two goals in nine of their last 10 matches.

Prediction

Southampton are on a six-game winning streak and their excellence can continue with a success over sixth-bottom Blackburn.

A top-six finish looks highly likely for Saints, who have collected 36 of their 69 points within the last 14 matches.

And there remains an outside chance of catching second-placed Ipswich, who face a daunting trip to St Mary’s during the final week of the campaign.

Southampton will be targeting five more wins to give themselves the best chance of catching the Tractor Boys and they can win by multiple goals against Rovers, who are the second lowest scorers in the division.
