Sheffield United have won four of their last five fixtures against Preston
Preston have won three of their last 19 matches
Recommended bet: Sheffield United -1 on Asian handicap
The playoffs are out of reach for Sheffield United and Preston, who will be playing for pride in their Yorkshire versus Lancashire clash at Bramall Lane.
Both are on 57 points and can finish no higher than 10th in the table.
And that level of performance is probably of greater irritation to Sheffield United, who were among the teams fancied to feature in the promotion race.
The Blades have lost 21 league matches, including Wednesday’s disappointing 3-1 reverse at home to Blackburn.
Preston’s presence in mid-table is less of a surprise, although they had hoped for something better after reaching the halfway stage (23 games) in fifth place.
The Lilywhites have largely struggled in 2026 and suffered a setback in midweek with a 2-1 loss at Birmingham.

Team news
Femi Seriki, Sydie Peck and Andre Brooks (all illness) were benched on Wednesday but could come back into the starting 11. However, a busy Blades' treatment room includes Tyrese Campbell, Michael Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Tom Davies, Ben Mee (all muscle strains) and Sam McCallum (Achilles). Callum O'Hare was an unused substitute on Wednesday but looks set for a recall.
Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom may ponder a few changes after his players expended a lot of energy in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat at Birmingham. However, he is unable to consider midfield duo Ben Whiteman (muscle strain) and Ali McCann (ankle), plus attacker Callum Lang (shoulder) and left back Jamal Lewis (thigh).

Prediction
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was clearly displeased by his team’s performance against Blackburn and he can get a positive response and a victory from his side’s final home game of the season.
Wilder desires the absolute minimum of a top-half finish to ensure a positive end to what has been a tough campaign.
However, he returned to the club in difficult circumstances last September and has done a reasonable job to get them well away from the relegation scrap.
While Sheffield United have improved over the course of the season, Preston failed to build on a positive start.
The Lilywhites have won just two of their last 13 fixtures and are unlikely to turn the tide at Bramall Lane where they have been beaten on each of their last two visits.
