Portsmouth host QPR at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon as the two teams kick off their Championship campaigns, hoping for improvements on last season.

Pompey gave a good account of themselves at West Ham in the Carabao Cup last weekend before losing 3-1, while QPR held Millwall to a draw but were knocked out on penalties after missing all four of their spot-kicks.

Team news

Portsmouth will be without Connor Ogilvie, Franco Umeh, Keshi Anderson and Josh Murphy due to injury, while Thomas Waddingham was forced off in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham and is a major doubt.

QPR defender Tariq Lamptey, who joined the club this summer, is still working his way back to fitness after missing most of last season while winger Karamoko Dembele is also sidelined.

Midfielder Glen Kamara is a doubt but could feature from the bench.

The stats

Portsmouth have not lost at home to QPR since a 3-1 defeat in May 2000, an unbeaten run of five games.

The Hoops ran out 6-1 winners when the sides met in March last season.

This will be Pompey’s third consecutive season in the second tier.

QPR had the second-worst defence in 2025-26, conceding 73 goals in 46 games.

The R's won the most recent meeting between the two sides, 6-1 at Loftus Road.

Prediction

Portsmouth will be out for revenge against QPR on Saturday after suffering a 6-1 hammering when the sides last met back in March.

John Mousinho and his men will be eager to right that wrong and kick off the new campaign with a victory.

QPR head to Fratton Park after losing on penalties to Millwall in the League Cup, having lost four games in a row in a six-game winless run at the end of the last campaign.

With home advantage, Portsmouth will be confident of winning on Saturday though it is likely to be a tight encounter.

Backing under 2.5 goals could prove a wise move with four of Portsmouth’s last five home league games featuring two goals or less, while QPR struggled on the road last season, scoring just 21 goals in their 23 away games.

Adrian Segecic opened the scoring against the Hammers last Saturday and netted 11 times in 38 league matches last season. The Croatia Under 21 international will look to test QPR and should record at least one shot on target.

Score prediction: Portsmouth 2-1 QPR
