  • Portsmouth have only lost one of their last seven Championship matches

  • Southampton have lost four of their last five Championship away games

  • Recommended bet: Portsmouth to win & both teams to score

Portsmouth are just a point clear of the Championship relegation zone heading into Sunday's derby at home to Southampton and they will be desperate for a positive result against their arch-rivals to continue their recent run of promising results.

Saints may only be six points adrift of the play-off positions but, with over half of the division in the running, their promotion hopes are dwindling due to a recent string of poor results.

Team news

Pompey's John Mousinho continues to deal with a lengthy injury list, although Marlon Pack could return to action on Sunday.

However, Conor Shaughnessy has been dealt another injury blow and joins Harvey Blair, Thomas Waddingham, Mark Kosznovszky, Josh Knight, Florian Bianchini, Franco Ume-Chibueze, Josh Murphy, and Callum Lang on the sidelines.

Leading scorer Adam Armstrong is expected to return to Southampton's starting line-up on Sunday, with only Mads Roerslev ruled out and Cameron Bragg an injury doubt.

The stats

Portsmouth have lost just one of their last seven league games.

Southampton have lost half of their league away fixtures this season and have won just one of their last seven Championship matches.

Pompey have taken seven points from their last three home league assignments, beating Charlton and Blackburn and drawing with QPR.

Saints have only won one of the last six South Coast league derbies, with all of the last three ending in draws.

Prediction

Portsmouth picked up an unlikely point in September's South Coast showdown with Southampton and an improving Pompey could go one better at Fratton Park on Sunday.

They have only lost one of the last six derby ties with Saints and have shown significant signs of improvement lately, losing just one of their last seven Championship matches.

Pompey have taken seven points from their last three home league fixtures and they face a visiting side that have managed only a single point from the last 15 available away from home.

However, a clean sheet is unlikely for the hosts, who have conceded in their last six matches on home turf.

Southampton's last outing away from home was a five-goal thriller at Doncaster and they have seen both teams score in 14 of their last 15 away games.

Form is not on Saints' side, though and they could come unstuck in front of a Fratton Park crowd desperate for a derby result to boost their fight against relegation.

Any goal Southampton do score may only be a consolation.
