  • Oxford defeated Leicester 2-1 in their previous Championship match

  • Birmingham are undefeated in five matches

  • Recommended bet: Birmingham to win

Oxford moved within three points of safety after sealing an impressive 2-1 win over Leicester during their last Championship match.

The club now sit on 27 points and they will hoping that another positive result this weekend could edge them up the table.

Birmingham occupy 13th after a five-game unbeaten run. Indeed, the Blues have not suffered a loss since a 3-0 reverse to Watford on New Year's Day.

They bounced back after that, however, defeating league leaders Coventry 3-2 and the club will be eyeing another three points on Saturday.

Team news

Przemyslaw Placheta will be missing for the U's this weekend, while Tyler Goodrham also misses out, meaning the home side will be weakened from an attacking point of view.

The Blues are also missing a few players ahead of this intriguing clash. Ethan Laird has a hamstring issue, Alex Cochrane has an ankle problem while Demarai Gray is sidelined due to a calf problem.

Despite this trio missing out, Chris Davies has signed Carlos Vicente and August Priske during the January transfer window in order to give his side a boost in the final third.

Both players could be unleashed against Oxford.

The stats

Meetings between these two sides have been few and far between. Indeed, only twice this century have the clubs met.

Oxford won a League Cup clash in August 2016, with Birmingham sealing a narrow 1-0 victory earlier this season.

Birmingham have won three and drawn two of their previous five matches in all competitions.

During that run, the Blues have scored ten goals, with three coming against Coventry a few weeks ago.

Both teams have scored in four of their previous five games.

Oxford are also on an unbeaten run of their own. The U's have not lost since a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich on January 1, winning once and drawing three of their next four games.

Both teams have scored in three of their last five matches.

Prediction

Despite the two clubs being separated by ten places and 12 points, this game could be closer than many people think.

The U's will be keen to maintain their four-game unbeaten run, while Birmingham know that three points could take them into the top half of the table.

They trail Wrexham in sixth by just five points, suggesting a playoff berth still remains within reach for the Blues this season.

Add in the fact Davies can count on two new signings will also give the club a massive boost heading into this match.

Vicente scored against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid during the first half of the season. A tie against Oxford, then, could be a slightly easier proposition for the winger.
