  • Middlesbrough have only registered two victories in their last eight league matches

  • Only four Championship teams have conceded fewer goals than Millwall's 44

  • Recommended bet: Draw and under 2.5 goals

Millwall travel to Teesside knowing a victory will catapult them into the automatic promotion places in the Championship, while host Middlesbrough are hoping to close the nine-point gap on leaders Coventry City.

Team news

Having limped off with a calf issue after setting up the opener during this month's 1-1 draw with Bristol City, Boro skipper Hayden Hackney remains sidelined.

Kim Hellberg is also without the services of Samuel Silvera, who has not featured since the end of January.

Central defensive duo Alfie Jones and Darragh Lenihan are both nursing ankle problems, while Morgan Whittaker is a doubt after missing the goalless draw against Blackburn.

Meanwhile, Millwall boss Alex Neil presides over an extensive injury list.

Belgian maestro Casper De Norre is currently struggling with a groin strain, while fellow midfielders Daniel Kelly and Massimo Luongo are set to be absent for the remainder of the season.

Alfie Doughty has not been involved in any of the Lions' last three fixtures due to a calf complaint, while Joe Bryan is out with a broken toe.

The stats

Middlesbrough put together a sequence of six consecutive victories following their New Year's Day defeat to Derby, but have since experienced a downturn in form.

The Teessiders have conceded just 14 league goals at the Riverside this term, but find the net more often in away fixtures than they do on home soil.

No team in the Championship has registered more clean sheets than Millwall, who claimed their 15th shut-out of the season in this month's narrow triumph over Derby.

The Lions have drawn six league away matches so far.

Prediction

Although these two teams have a realistic chance of promotion, confidence levels will currently be low in both camps.

Hellberg's Boro have not tasted victory since hammering QPR at Loftus Road earlier this month, while the Lions are losing momentum in their bid to return to the top-flight after a 36-year absence.

Millwall's defensive record suggests clear-cut chances will be at a premium for the hosts, who are failing to score goals on a consistent basis.

However, the visitors are not exactly well-placed to exploit Boro's attacking profligacy as they are also misfiring in the final third, having netted just one goal in each of their last three outings.

Despite losing just four times on the road this season, the South Londoners will not feel overly optimistic heading into this one given the outcome of the pair's last head-to-head clash, which ended 3-0 to the visitors at The Den.

Nevertheless, the form guide suggests we will see a tight and cagey affair at the Riverside, with neither side expected to trouble the scoresheet too often.
