Kim Hellberg's Middlesbrough have work to do to get promotion push back on track
  • Middlesbrough have won their last two matches to stay second

  • Charlton ended a run of four games without victory by beating Birmingham

  • Recommended bet: Middlesbrough win

Promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough have won their last two games on the road but will be looking for a first victory in three home matches when they host Charlton at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Addicks beat Birmingham City on Saturday and know another triumph would be a huge boost as they attempt to stay clear of the Championship relegation battle.

Team news

Middlesbrough are assessing the fitness of Dael Fry after the defender struggled with a hamstring problem at QPR on Sunday and was subbed off on the half-hour mark as a precaution.

Fellow Boro centre-back Alfie Jones is out with an ankle injury, while Alex Bangura has a muscle issue.

Charlton forward Matt Godden is unavailable due to a hamstring issue, while Harvey Knibbs and defender Reece Burke will also miss the midweek trip north.

The stats

No team has conceded fewer goals in the Championship than Middlesbrough and Ipswich (35) this season.

Charlton are the second-joint lowest scorers in the second tier, finding the net just 34 times in 36 games.

Middlesbrough have lost just one of their last 13 league matches against Charlton, winning 10 and drawing two.

Charlton are winless in six visits to the Riverside, last beating Boro away 3-0 in August 2005 in the top flight.

Boro have lost just twice at home this season and are unbeaten in their last five, conceding just once in that time.

Prediction

Middlesbrough are doing all they can to keep the pressure on Championship leaders Coventry while ensuring they are staying ahead of automatic promotion hopefuls Millwall and Ipswich.

Boro are second in the table having won their last two matches and will be confident of making it three victories from three when they host Charlton on Wednesday.

The Teessiders have lost just one of their last 17 home meetings with the Addicks and are big favourites to earn another three points.

Charlton travel to the Riverside after ending a run of four games without a win by beating Birmingham on Saturday but it’s likely Kim Hellberg’s side will boast too much quality and momentum for the Londoners on Wednesday night.

Nathan Jones’ side have kept it tight in recent weeks with six of the last seven matches involving Charlton featuring two goals or less.

However, Boro are strong going forward, scoring a combined seven times in their last two outings and so it’s hard to back the Addicks recording another shutout against such ruthless opposition.
