  • Middlesbrough suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Charlton in midweek

  • Bristol City have lost four successive matches in all competitions

  • Recommended bet: Middlesbrough to win

Middlesbrough slipped further behind leaders Coventry after losing to Charlton in midweek.

The gap between first and second is now eight points with just nine matches left. By no means impossible, but given how impressive Coventry have been recently, it looks as though Boro are fighting for second.

Bristol City enter this clash on the back of four successive defeats in all competitions.

The Robins sit 12th in the table, only seven points away from sixth place, but it will take something special for them to make it into the play-off positions by the end of the season.

Team news

Boro will be missing Alex Bangura, Alfie Jones, Darragh Lenihan and Sam Silvera for the clash against Bristol City on Saturday.

Dael Fry missed the defeat to Charlton in midweek after suffering a hamstring issue against QPR last weekend. It remains to be seen whether he will be in the squad for this contest.

The away side will continue to be without Robert Atkinson, Robert Dickie, Luke McNally and Joe Williams due to injury.

Elsewhere, Adam Randell is serving the second game of his suspension having received two bookings in the recent defeat to Coventry.

The stats

Bristol City are eyeing a league double over their opponents having won 2-0 in the reverse fixture back in December 2025.

Indeed, the Robins have an excellent record against Boro in recent years. Since the start of the 2015/16 campaign, the two sides have met on 19 occasions, with City winning 12 of those ties.

Boro have claimed just four victories in that period, and none since August 2021.

Both teams have scored in seven of the previous nine matches between the clubs.

Boro have lost only three Championship matches in 2026, while City have suffered seven league defeats in the same period.

The home side have the best defensive record in the second tier, conceding just 36 goals in 37 games.

City have conceded 48 times in the league, which is the second-highest out of those in the top-half of the table.

Prediction

If Boro wish to seal a first promotion since 2016 this season, they will need to bounce back fast from that midweek loss to Charlton.

Millwall remain only a single point behind them in third place, which means a win on Saturday is imperative if they wish to start rebuilding some momentum.

The club’s recent record against Bristol City is poor, but Kim Hellberg’s side will be facing them at precisely the right time.

As such, expect a home victory this weekend, although the away side could make things tricky.
