  • Southampton have won just four from 16 on the road in the Championship

Leicester find themselves in a dogfight for survival after their points deduction, with the Foxes now outside of the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

Southampton are in mid-table, though only four points adrift of the final play-off spot. The Saints have a lot of traffic to negotiate if they want to chase down the top six and their troubles on the road may well see them struggling to make headway.

Team news

Leicester, playing their first match since their six-point deduction for breaking spending rules, gave a good account of themselves but ultimately feel short in the 2-1 loss at Birmingham on Saturday.

They will be without Bobby De Cordova-Reid now after his red card at St Andrew's while Aaron Ramsey, Harry Souttar and Jannik Vestergaard are likely to miss out again.

Hamza Choudhury and Jordan James will continue to be assessed after missing recent games.

Saints are likely to be missing Jay Robinson and Oriel Romeu as well as long-term absentee Mads Roerslev, but no fresh injuries were reported after their 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The stats

Southampton won the reverse game 3-0 at St Mary's in November, ending a run of four straight defeats against the Foxes.

Previously to that game, three of the last four league meetings had produced exactly five goals.

Southampton's win at Stoke on January 31 was just their fourth away victory in 16 so far.

Saints are unbeaten in four Championship games, having previously failed to win in seven.

Leicester have won five of the last six meetings at the King Power Stadium (L1).

Since that November defeat at St Mary's the Foxes have scored in 14 of 15 games in league and cup.

Prediction

Southampton had only won two of their 13 games in the Championship before Tonda Eckert took over in the dugout in November.

They made a superb start under the German, winning six of his first seven games, but a seven-game winless sequence into the New Year derailed their progress.

Saints have recovered some momentum to win three of the last four but lots of traffic separates them from the play-off places.

Eckert presided over wins at QPR and Charlton in November but since then just one road success in seven has come his way in the Championship.

Despite their off-field problems, Leicester showed real spirit at Birmingham on Saturday where they played an hour with a man less.

"We need to stop giving ourselves mountains to climb early in games" was the verdict of caretaker boss Andy King afterwards.

That is true, but the fact his side has scored in 14 of their last 15 games in league and cup means they almost always have a base from which to build on.

Southampton have managed just one clean sheet in 16 games away from home in the league and have scored multiple goals only once in the last seven on their travels.

A share of the spoils is not really what either of these teams wants in their current plight, but it could be just what they have to settle for.
