Sergej Jakirovic will be hoping Hull can get a much-needed boost against Sheffield Wednesday
  • Sheffield Wednesday have lost their last nine away league games

  • Hull have managed just one clean sheet in their last nine matches

  • Recommended bet: Hull to win & both teams to score

Sheffield Wednesday have long since been relegated from the Championship but they will be keen to get one over Yorkshire rivals Hull and put a dent in their play-off aspirations.

It has been a season of misery for Wednesday, who were deducted 18 points earlier in the campaign for entering administration and have managed only one win from their 38 league outings.

Things have been much happier for Hull and, despite losing three of their last four league fixtures, they are in the play-off places and dreaming of a Premier League return.

The Owls did hold Hull to a 2-2 at Hillsborough in December but they have suffered defeat in 13 of their 18 away games and must be fearing the worst at the MKM Stadium.

Team news

Hull have defender Charlie Hughes suspended following his red card in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to West Brom while Akin Famewo, Ryan Giles, Darko Gyabi, Yu Hirakawa and Matty Jacob are sidelined through injury.

Eliot Matazo has fallen out of favour for the Tigers while Lewie Coyle faces a late fitness test.

Sheffield Wednesday could see seasoned defender Max Lowe return for the first time since Christmas, but the match may come too soon for striker George Brown.

The Owls will definitely be without Liam Cooper, Di’Shon Bernard, Ernie Weave, Olaf Kobacki, Guilherme Siqueira and Murphy Cooper.

The stats

Sheffield Wednesday are winless in their last 32 league matches, drawing eight times and suffering 24 defeats.

The Owls have suffered nine straight away league losses.

Hull have lost three of their last four Championship matches but remain fifth in the table and in the play-off places.

The Tigers have won only one of their last five meetings with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday have scored in four of their last six Championship defeats.

There have been three or more goals in seven of Hull’s last nine matches.

Prediction

Hull are in the Championship play-off places but three defeats in four suggests it is on sufferance and they will be desperate to claim maximum points against relegated Sheffield Wednesday.

Victory should be the minimum expectation for Sergej Jakirovic’s side as Wednesday have lost 15 of their last 16 matches, the only exception being a 1-1 draw at home to Watford.

That said, the Owls have found their scoring boots of late, netting in five of their last seven matches, which includes clashes with fourth-placed Millwall and play-off-chasing Southampton.

Hull score plenty but defensively they are suspect, with their tally of 56 goals conceded in 38 games the worst of anyone in the division’s top 15, and they have kept only one clean sheet in nine.
