Sergej Jakirovic's Hull are firmly in the promotion mix
  • Surprise packages Hull are just four points behind Championship leaders Coventry

  • Bristol City are down in 10th but are only four points off the play-off places

  • Recommended bet: Hull to win

Hull missed a golden opportunity to move within two points of the Championship’s top two, Coventry and Middlesbrough, when being held to a 0-0 draw by Watford on Tuesday.

However, they are still firmly in the promotion race and will fancy their chances of bouncing back when they host Bristol City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The Robins’ bright start has fizzled out and while they are still within touching distance of the play-off places, recent results suggest they are in for a tough afternoon in Hull.

Team news

Hull will be without injured stars Semi Ajayi, Mohamed Belloumi, Cody Drameh, Matt Crooks, Ryan Giles, Darko Gyabi and Eliot Matazo, while loanee Yu Hirakawa is ineligible to face his parent club.

Rob Atkinson, Max Bird and Luke McNally are out for Bristol City, who will hope new signings Noah Eile and Tomi Horvat can make an immediate impact.

The stats

Hull have lost just one of their last 11 Championship games and have won eight times during that impressive run.

Bristol City’s only win in their last five Championship games came against rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday.

The Robins have failed to score in four of their last five league matches.

Hull have kept four clean sheets in their last six home games.

Bristol City have lost three of their last five away matches.

Prediction

Having lost the xG battle 0.3-0.93 , Hull’s performance against Watford was extremely disappointing. However, showings that poor have not been common for the Tigers and they should bounce back against Bristol City.

Saturday’s hosts had been brilliant before that stalemate, beating Southampton, Preston, Swansea and Blackburn to make it four wins on the spin and Sergej Jakirovic’s side can reach that level again.

Bristol City’s last game saw them thrashed 5-0 at home by Derby and while manager Gerhard Steiner is unlikely to allow another embarrassment, a defeat does seem to be on the cards.

The Robins’ sole win in five Championship games came against rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday and given they failed to score in the other four matches, there is little hope they have what it takes to break down promotion-chasing Hull.

The Tigers have strengthened their ranks, too, making smart loan moves for Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer and Liverpool’s Lewis Koumas, while Saturday’s visitors have only regressed.

Bristol City saw both their best player, Anis Mehmeti, and an experienced defender, Zak Vyner, leave in the January transfer window and those exits could see them fall out of play-off contention altogether.

Everything points towards a Hull win and the Tigers can get their claws stuck in and exact revenge for August’s 4-2 defeat at Ashton Gate.
