Derby have had a progressive first year under John Eustace and will be keen to boost their Championship play-off hopes by taking three points off Blackburn at Pride Park.

A few eyebrows were raised when Eustace agreed a switch from Blackburn to Derby in February 2025.

But Derby have done well under the 46-year-old, who is establishing them as a strong second-tier side.

Eustace sensed a lack of ambition at his former club, Blackburn, and his instincts were probably correct.

Blackburn have gone from play-off challengers to Championship strugglers and will have only survival on their minds as they strive to increase the four-point gap between themselves and the drop zone.

Team news

Derby must continue to make do without Sondre Langas and Max Johnston, who are sidelined with hamstring injuries. But there is the option of handing a start to powerful striker Carlton Morris, who returned from an ankle injury earlier this month and has made three successive substitute appearances.

Blackburn continue to be stretched with Lewis Miller (Achilles) joining Scott Wharton, Ryan Hedges, Matty Litherland, Augustus Kargbo, Sidnei Tavares and George Pratt on their injured list. Todd Cantwell is one of their key creative players but he remains absent with a foot injury.

Prediction

Derby’s play-off push has been hampered by ongoing struggles on home soil and there could be further frustration to come with a share of the spoils looking the most likely outcome against Blackburn.

The onus is on Derby to push for the three points as they strive to reduce the six-point gap to the play-off places.

But their physical style of football is unlikely to concern Blackburn, who showed their resilient side in last Saturday’s 2-1 victory away to QPR.

Blackburn suffered a setback on Tuesday, losing 2-1 at home to Bristol City, although they dominated the second half and finished with a shot count advantage of 19 to 10.

Rovers have grown accustomed to being stuck in the lower reaches of the division, but they are  showing some promise under experienced manager Michael O’Neil and can secure a precious point this weekend.
