There are two Championship games on the schedule on Tuesday and one of them is a key fixture in the relegation battle as 18th-placed Charlton host Portsmouth, who are 21st.

Pompey are only one point above the relegation zone, although they have two games in hand on Leicester in 22nd, while the Addicks are six points better off than Tuesday's opponents having played one more match, after taking seven points from their last three games.

Portsmouth are unbeaten in the last three meetings between the teams, though and won their first clash of the season 2-1 at Fratton Park in a close finish in December.

Team news

The hosts are set to be without defender Josh Edwards and attacking midfielder Harvey Knibbs, who both have ankle injuries.

Striker Miles Leaburn (shoulder) is another injury concern and Tyreece Campbell could come into the starting line-up after scoring a winner against Stoke as a substitute.

Portsmouth's long list of absentees includes Conor Chaplin, Hayden Matthews, Josh Knight, Conor Shaughnessy, Mark Kosznovszky, Josh Murphy, Florian Bianchini, Harvey Blair, Franco Umeh and Thomas Waddingham.

Andre Dozzell and Adrian Segecic will need to be assessed after picking up knocks in Saturday's match against Sheffield United.

The stats

Seven of these two teams' last eight meetings have produced over 2.5 goals.

Charlton have lost only four of their 15 home league fixtures this season.

Portsmouth have conceded just two goals in their last three away games and five of Pompey's last six games have produced under 2.5 goals.

Both league matches between the teams in the 2023-24 season were draws.

Both teams have scored in just one of Charlton's last six matches.

Prediction

Charlton have responded to their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Millwall by keeping three successive clean sheets and picking up seven valuable points from those matches.

A late winner from Campbell against Stoke last Wednesday improved their position in the Championship table and spared them a second successive goalless draw, but another close contest could be in store when Portsmouth visit on Tuesday.

Pompey have lost back-to-back games since a four-match unbeaten run, but they were not blown away in either contest, winning the corners battle 14-2 in a 1-0 defeat at Preston before going down to a 90th-minute winner at home to an improving Sheff Utd side on Saturday.

With under 2.5 goals an understandably short price for this encounter, backing the draw in a match between two teams struggling up front could provide a better value wager.

The visitors have avoided defeat in half of their 14 away games, drawing five of them, while Charlton have won only three of their last nine at home in all competitions.

Pompey's last visit to The Valley in League One in February 2024 was a goalless draw and it would not be surprising if this one ended either 0-0 or 1-1.
