  • Derby have taken seven points from nine in their last three games

Bristol City and Derby are both in the thick of the Championship play-off race and that should help them produce a decent spectacle when they lock horns at Ashton Gate on Friday.

The Robins have won five of their last six home matches against the Rams, but the visitors have lost just two of their last 10 league outings and won their last two away games at Preston and Charlton.

Team news

Utility player Zak Vyner is still struggling for City after missing last week's 2-0 success over bottom side Sheff Wed, but the Robins have not reported any fresh injury concerns.

Derby are still likely to be without Max Johnston and striker Carlton Morris, but Matt Clarke is available after being suspended for last week's 1-1 draw with West Brom.

The stats

Both teams have scored in six of Derby's last eight Championship matches, while nine of the Rams' 11 league victories this season have been by a single-goal margin.

City have kept three clean sheets in their last five games and have won four of their last five home matches.

Derby have suffered a 1-0 defeat on each of their last three visits to Ashton Gate.

The Rams have scored one goal in 11 of their last 13 matches.

Prediction

Fifth-placed Millwall have opened a five-point gap between themselves and Wrexham, but the battle for that final play-off place is looking intense and both City and Derby are right in the heat of the battle.

The Rams are 11th but only a point behind the seventh-placed Robins and that should mean the visitors go on the front foot when they head to Ashton Gate on Friday.

There have been only two occasions this season when John Eustace's side have failed to find the net in 29 Championship games and the most recent of those was a 1-0 defeat to Oxford on October 18.

So it is realistic that they can find the net at Ashton Gate, even though they have avoided defeat in just one of their last six visits and the Robins' defence has been generally holding firm.

However, a 2-0 win for the home side against Wednesday, who are stranded at the bottom of the table, and a 5-0 success over struggling Portsmouth have to be put into context.

The forward ability is there for the home side and this clash should be a lot more competitive than those two outings, and, with a play-off place very much up for grabs for both sides, it is a game that could generate a few goals.
