Pervis Estupinan is one of several players that is being criticised for his performances after Ecuador failed to score again.

Marcelo Gallardo’s side are yet to find the back of the net since he took over. After a heavy 3-0 defeat against South Korea in their debut, they team drew 0-0 against Japan in the Kirin Cup semi-final and were eliminated on penalties, losing 5-4 in the shootout.

As MilanVibes point out, Estupinan continues to be a key figure in Gallardo’s plans. After the match against South Korea, was once again included in the starting XI against Japan, again wearing the number 7.

His performances, however, continue to be met with discontent. After the game against South Korea, the Ecuadorian press had identified the level of the full-backs – including Estupiñán – as one of the areas in need of improvement.

Bolavip – one of Ecuador’s most followed online sports publications – launched a survey asking its readers whether the AC Milan full-back deserved to continue being a starter for the Selección. The result confirmed the climate of strong mistrust towards Estupiñán.

The next match will be against Panama, in the third-place match of the Kirin Cup. The game is scheduled for October 5th, after Los Canaleros lost the other semi-final against New Zealand.
