Ajax were limited to a 3-1 victory over Shelbourne at the Amsterdam Arena last Thursday, but they are in a strong position to take another step forward in the Conference League qualifying process.

Participation in the Conference League is not what Ajax would have been hoping for, but it offers them a realistic chance of striving for silverware.

The Dutch side are among the biggest names in the draw and were always going to pose a really tough challenge to Shelbourne, who are battling to reach the league phase for a second successive season.

Shelbourne posted a 6-4 aggregate success over Estonian side Nomme Kalju in the previous round, but further progress would depend on registering one of the most spectacular results in their history.

Team news

Shelbourne are likely to be without attacker Ademipo Odubeko (knock), who was absent for the opening leg and has not featured for almost two months.

Daniel Kelly grabbed a goal in Amsterdam and should continue on the left of a three-pronged attack, with Evan Caffrey playing centrally.

Ajax have a mission to complete and are unlikely to make wholesale changes.

Rayane Bounida, Josip Sutalo, Ko Itakura (all unspecified injuries) and Ahmetcan Kaplan (knee) are unlikely to be involved.

The stats

  • Ajax have won all of their three Conference League qualifiers despite failing to keep a clean sheet on each occasion

  • Ajax are unbeaten in their last seven competitive games

  • Three of Ajax's last four matches have featured at least four goals

  • Ajax have started the scoring in five of their last six fixtures

  • Shelbourne have lost their last four matches

  • Shelbourne have gone 11 games without keeping a clean sheet

Prediction

Shelbourne avoided a hammering on last Thursday's visit to Amsterdam, but they may struggle to sidestep a heavy loss in the return match at Tolka Park, Dublin.

The Irish side had the last say in the opening leg with Kelly getting on the scoresheet with one of their three goal attempts.

But they were fortunate to escape further punishment from Ajax, who registered 30 efforts, including a missed penalty from Paris Saint-Germain transfer target Mika Godts.

Ajax were left slightly frustrated by a two-goal success, but they can show a more clinical edge in the Irish capital and achieve a winning margin of three goals or more.
