Three Chelsea stars targeted for Bournemouth amid fresh worries
Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Reece James are all being targeted for a potential Chelsea return against Bournemouth on October 10, though the club have picked up further injury concerns during the international break.
Palmer, Joao Pedro and James all pencilled in for Bournemouth
Palmer withdrew from the England squad with what’s understood to be a minor muscular injury, partly down to load management as Chelsea look to avoid a repeat of the groin trouble that hampered him last season. Joao Pedro has been missing since picking up a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Hull, an issue covered in our recent update on the striker’s recovery, and James has been nursing a hamstring problem since the same game.
All three are listed with a potential return date of October 10 against Bournemouth, though that should be read as a target rather than a confirmed clearance. Palmer’s situation follows on from the issues detailed in our earlier piece on his groin problems, while James’s latest setback is another chapter in the fitness struggles outlined in our look at his recurring injury concerns.
Joao Pedro was expected to face a late fitness test before the Brentford defeat but didn’t feature, and he subsequently withdrew from Brazil’s squad for the international break. James didn’t feature at Brentford either and missed out on England duty, with Thomas Tuchel saying: “He tried, we waited until this morning but he couldn’t make it. Now we have enough time to prepare for the next one. He was just short of recovering.”
What it means for Xabi Alonso’s options
Getting all three back would be a significant boost for Alonso heading into the Bournemouth game, restoring firepower and a captain who has been absent since the Hull draw. Chelsea are said to be managing Palmer cautiously rather than rushing him, while Joao Pedro is expected to benefit from three full weeks of rest.
They won’t be the only ones assessed. Moises Caicedo, who has played just 14 minutes all season while recovering from a calf issue and was forced off again after coming on against Brighton, is also down for a potential October 10 return. Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha, two summer arrivals still waiting for their Chelsea debuts, share the same target date.
Mike Penders and Jamie Gittens complicate the picture further after picking up fresh problems on international duty. Penders suffered a quad injury in Belgium training, while Gittens sustained an ankle injury playing for England Under-21s against Kazakhstan and was pictured leaving the ground on crutches in a protective boot. Neither has a firm return date attached.
Chelsea will continue assessing the squad before Bournemouth, and any shift away from these provisional October 10 targets would need a fresh medical update rather than assumption from where things stand now.
