Chelsea have reportedly entered the race for Jarell Quansah after Bayer Leverkusen rejected Arsenal’s £55.5m bid, but no Blues offer or transfer has been confirmed.

Chelsea and Alonso reportedly lead Quansah pursuit

football.london reported on 30 September 2026 that Xabi Alonso and Chelsea are leading the pursuit of the England international. Citing reports from SportBILD, it said Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Liverpool are all interested.

The report says Chelsea have made contact about a possible move, though it is unclear whether that approach was to Leverkusen or Quansah’s representatives. That distinction matters: reported interest is a step forward, but it is not evidence that the clubs are negotiating a deal.

Arsenal had reportedly agreed terms with the defender before Leverkusen turned down their offer. Quansah was said to have accepted the German club’s decision, leaving the door open for other suitors without making an Arsenal move a completed deal that later collapsed.

Leverkusen have a strong hand. The 23-year-old’s contract runs until 2030, and the club have already shown they are not prepared to let him go for the reported £55.5m. Chelsea’s defensive concerns have been in view, and Chelsea’s defensive performance against Arsenal adds context to why another centre-back could be on the agenda.

Quansah joined Leverkusen from Liverpool in summer 2025 for £30m, with a further £5m in add-ons. He has impressed since moving to Germany, and his versatility makes him an appealing option for clubs looking for a defender who can cover more than one role.

Real Madrid are also reportedly tracking him closely. football.london says his friendship with Jude Bellingham could be one factor that makes a move to Madrid attractive, though there is no indication that Quansah has chosen a destination.

Leverkusen hold the leverage as Chelsea weigh their options

Liverpool’s position adds another complication. The club reportedly have a £70m buyback clause valid until 15 June next year, and are keeping their options open should Virgil van Dijk leave Anfield. That gives Quansah’s former club a defined route back into the picture, even as Chelsea, Arsenal and Madrid monitor the situation.

The rejected Arsenal bid gives us a useful marker, not a settled price for Chelsea. Leverkusen’s contract protection means the Blues may need to make a compelling offer if their interest becomes concrete; a separate report on Chelsea’s interest in Maxence Lacroix shows another centre-back target has been linked with significant spending, but says nothing about Quansah’s valuation.

For now, there is no confirmed Chelsea bid and no completed transfer. The contact remains vague, while Leverkusen’s contract and Liverpool’s reported clause make this a complicated pursuit rather than a straightforward opportunity.

Liverpool have also signed Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, although the primary report says Leoni is sidelined with a long-term injury. Real Madrid’s reported interest keeps the competition serious, while Chelsea’s reported interest in Alessandro Bastoni points to a broader defensive recruitment picture under Alonso-not confirmation of a move for Quansah.
