Denzel Dumfries opens up on Jose Mourinho relationship at Real Madrid
Denzel Dumfries was one of the additions that Real Madrid made to their team in the last summer transfer window. The Dutchman arrived to replace Dani Carvajal, and to provide an alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold for Jose Mourinho.
Despite the competition with the Englishman, the Dutch defender has played quite a prominent role for the Merengue team in this initial stage of the season. Meanwhile, he has also impressed for his national team in this international break.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the fullback appeared in an interview with Libero, and talked about his signing for Los Blancos and his new coach, Jose Mourinho. The defender highlighted one common interest he has with the Portuguese coach:
“I really like him. He is a great coach. You only have to look at what he has achieved in his career. Obviously, I also know about his past at Inter. We are at the beginning of the season and are only just getting to know each other, but my first impressions are very good. We have spoken a lot about Inter. The time we spent there was very special for both of us. We love Inter, we still follow the team and we talk about them.”
Dumfries opened up on how he ended up signing for Real Madrid:
“After five years at Inter, I felt that it was the right time to try something new. For me, Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, and it is a privilege to play here. It had nothing to do with Inter, because I had a wonderful time there. But sometimes in life you feel that you need new challenges, and Real Madrid was the perfect club for me. Playing for Inter was a great honour, but this was the step I wanted to take. My teammates were also very happy for me. It was the right time.”
The defender also revealed how he felt when he first got to know of the Spanish club’s interest:
“It was after the season had ended, before the World Cup. My agent called me and told me he was in contact with Real Madrid. I was very happy and proud. I told Piero [Ausilio] straight away. I had an excellent relationship with him and everyone at Inter, and I wanted them to know immediately.”
While not closing a door to a return to Inter Milan in the future, the fullback assured that for now, he was looking only to reach his best level at Real Madrid:
“Well… we’ll see if they still want me after my time in Madrid! In any case, I will be linked to Inter for life. I don’t know in what role, but some things last forever. For now, I want to give my best for Real Madrid and win trophies. Then we’ll see what happens.”
With his experience and skills, Denzel Dumfries can prove to be a decisive player for Real Madrid this season. Hopefully, Mourinho will be able to get the best out of the defender, while also finding a way to keep both the Dutchman and Trent happy.
