Who will claim it?
The financial charges hanging over Manchester City, dubbed the 115 charges case in the media, have reignited speculation over the futures of several of the club's biggest names. Chief among them is Norway's Erling Haaland, with sanctions looming that could shape City's path for years to come.
The case remains stuck on a legal track that could drag on. City are expected to appeal any ruling that goes against them.
Sporting punishment is another matter. A points deduction, potentially severe enough to threaten the club's Premier League survival, has cracked open a scenario in which some of the stars head for the exit.
The Sun report that Real Madrid and Barcelona could go head to head for a clutch of City players should sanctions derail the club's future, among them Josko Gvardiol, Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki and Ayyoub Bouaddi. But it's Haaland who draws the most attention.
The Norwegian striker is tied to City until 2034, and reports indicate there is no clause allowing him to leave automatically should the team be relegated. That hands the English club a strong hand in any negotiations. City don't look ready to part with their stars easily either, even if the sanctions land.
Barcelona or Real Madrid?
Spanish newspaper Sport say Haaland's name has been linked with both Real Madrid and Barcelona for some time. Neither club has taken any official steps to sign him.
Barcelona could offer the Norwegian a natural fit, particularly given Raphinha's ability to operate as a striker or a winger, and the club's earlier interest in Julian Alvarez to bolster the centre-forward slot.
Real Madrid present a thornier picture. Kylian Mbappe already occupies the striker role, flanked by Vinicius Junior, Bellingham and a host of other attacking talent, so Haaland's arrival would force a reshuffle of roles across the side.
For now, a Haaland exit from City hinges on how the case unfolds and the wishes of player and club alike. Any heavy sanction could throw open a very different transfer market, and drag the Norwegian back into the sights of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
