Chelsea were off to a bright start this season, but their terrible defensive record has started costing them dearly in results.

Chelsea are having a terrible season defensively. Their attacking prowess covered it up for a while, but the reality has caught up to them in the last few weeks.

As you can see in the image below, the detailed defensive stats from their Premier League campaign so far are truly horrible.

Chelsea’s horrific defensive season broken down

The Blues are dead last in the whole league in goals conceded. That’s the headline news, and nothing else really matters. However, a deeper look at those other stats show just how bad thing are.

There are 0 clean sheets, not surprising when you’ve conceded 12 in 5 games. The defenders aren’t doing their job – we’re bottom for shots on target faced and 19th for big chances faced.

But the goalkeepers aren’t doing their bit either – our xG against is only 15th, so we’re underperforming even that.

The midfield aren’t providing enough protection, and while Moises Caicedo’s return will help, we can’t lie to ourselves that that will fix everything. Xabi Alonso better have been hard at work on the training pitch this week.

In other news…

Jules Kounde keeps being linked to Chelsea – we just can’t see a move happening in January, despite the Blues’ defensive issues.

Xabi Alonso has a lot to think about in this international break – and part of it has to be how to get Estevao into his team.

Morgan Rogers is an exceptional player, and his running stats are as off the charts as his goals and assists.
