Chelsea reach agreement on first January transfer

Chelsea have reportedly agreed to finalise a loan deal for academy defender Olutayo Subuloye during the upcoming January transfer window.

The 18-year-old caught the eye during the Blues’ pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, and after an excellent start to the regular campaign at U21 level, the club have decided to pursue a loan deal in order to accelerate his development.

That is according to The Evening Standard, who report that several European clubs have already submitted loan enquiries to sign the centre-back, while teams in the English pyramid are also likely to vie for his signature in January.

Subuloye, who was named the captain of Chelsea’s U21 side over the summer, has over three-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, and it’s understood that he is valued extremely highly by club staff, with many believing that he will develop into a first-team regular.

The teenager is reportedly targeting a senior debut in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup this season, and the Chelsea board have agreed to finalise a loan deal when the January window opens.

Chelsea implement new loan strategy

Subuloye will become the latest Chelsea youngster to head out on loan this season if a January deal is finalised, with a host of Blues academy starlets currently plying their trade in the senior game following a change of strategy over the summer.

Last season, Chelsea opted to keep their most promising youngsters in the building in a bid to win the PL2 and the UEFA Youth League, but they opted against copying that approach in 2026-27.

Instead, the likes of Reggie Walsh, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Jesse Derry, Landon Emenalo, Harrison Murray-Campbell and Shumaira Mheuka were all sent out on loan this summer, and Subuloye is reportedly set to follow suit when the winter window opens.
