Chelsea fans should not panic on Emi Martinez's substitution for Argentina

Emi Martínez being withdrawn during Argentina’s friendly win over Burkina Faso was always going to raise eyebrows, particularly with Chelsea already short of fit goalkeepers.

There have been rumours that Martínez suffered a fractured finger and needs time to recover, while Mike Penders was also injured while on Belgium duty during this international break.

However, the panic appears to be misplaced when the full context of Martínez’s substitution is considered. He was not the only player taken off, with all 11 starters replaced as part of a planned rotation rather than a reactive change forced by injury.

He was substituted in the 78th minute for Gerónimo Rulli during the 7-0 win, with the concern stemming from the timing of the change. Martínez was the final substitution of the match, coming in a lone window with no other players taken off at the same time. Earlier, Valentín Barco came on in the 67th minute and provided an assist.

Friendlies against lower-ranked opposition, ones they are expected to beat, are routinely used by national teams to manage minutes, assess squad depth and give the youngsters international experience without overworking key players ahead of more important fixtures. Argentina planning for the future.

Replacing an entire XI mid-game is a deliberate coaching decision by Lionel Scaloni, not the sort of mass substitution that suggests something has gone wrong. Reading an injury crisis into a planned rotation says more about the existing fractured finger speculation than what actually happened during the match.

That is not to dismiss the finger concerns entirely; the rumours did not appear from nowhere, and largely come from last season with Aston Villa. But linking them to an unrelated tactical decision is exactly how a routine team-news story can become unnecessary alarm.

If Martínez were carrying a serious injury, the bigger warning sign would be him being withdrawn while his teammates remained on the pitch, not all 11 starters being replaced together.

For now, the sensible read is the boring one. Argentina used a comfortable friendly to rotate their entire first team, Martinez included, and the finger issue, real or not, had nothing to do with why he came off when he did. Until there's actual evidence connecting the two, this is a non-story being treated like one.

Time will tell on Tuesday evening in Lionel Messi’s final farewell match as Emi will want to be on the field to say goodbye to his good mate on the international stage.
