Arsenal were sent packing from another domestic cup competition as they fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at Southampton on Saturday and they face a tough test when they visit an in-form Sporting side in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The Lions put four past Santa Clara in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Friday and boast a perfect home record in this competition this season, so they may well be able defy the odds on Tuesday.

Team news

Sporting will be without the quartet of Nuno Santos, Fotis Ioannidis, Geovany Quenda, and Luis Guilherme on Tuesday, but star man Luis Suarez is set to lead the line ahead of attacking midfield trio Trincao, Geny Catamo, and Pote.

Gunners central defender Gabriel Magalhaes is a doubt for the trip to Lisbon after picking up a knock against Saints and he could join Piero Hincapie, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze on the sidelines.

Sweden international striker Viktor Gyokeres is expected to lead Arsenal's attack against one of his former clubs.

The stats

Sporting have scored 11 goals in their last three games, while Arsenal have only won one of their last four meetings with the Portuguese giants.

Sporting have won all five Champions League home games this season.

The Gunners have failed to win three of their last five matches, losing the EFL Cup final and being knocked out of the FA Cup.

Prediction

Sporting made it three wins on the bounce with their 4-2 victory over Santa Clara on Friday and the free-scoring Portuguese side could make a game of it against heavy favourites Arsenal.

Just weeks after their odds of winning an unprecedented quadruple were slashed, the Gunners find themselves with just two chances of silverware still on the table and Verde e Brancos could pile the pressure on Mikel Arteta on Wednesday.

The Gunners were beaten at second-tier Southampton on Saturday and lost the League Cup final 2-0 to Manchester City before the international break, leaving them winless in their last three games away from their own Emirates Stadium.

They have only won three times in their last nine games away from their home crowd and Sporting have a fantastic home record in this competition.

Tuesday's hosts have won all five Champions League home games this term by an aggregate scoreline of 14-3.

This includes a 2-1 win against defending champions PSG, making up part of an ongoing nine-game unbeaten run at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

They have won eight of these games and look a good bet to take a good result into their second-leg trip to the English capital next week.
