  • Galatasaray scored twice in extra-time to beat Juventus 7-5 on aggregate in play-off round

  • Liverpool out to avenge September's 1-0 league phase defeat at Galatasaray

  • Recommended bet: Galatasaray or draw

Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 in September's league-phase fixture in the Champions League but the Reds have the chance to make amends in the round of 16.

Arne Slot's men bounced back with away victories over Eintracht Frankfurt (5-1), Inter Milan (1-0) and Marseille (3-0) to seal a top-eight finish.

While Liverpool progressed straight to the last 16, Galatasaray came through a thrilling play-off against Juventus in which they needed extra-time to progress in Turin despite winning the home leg 5-2.

Team news

Galatasaray's only confirmed absentee is young goalkeeper Enes Emre Buyuk (shoulder).

Liverpool are without first-choice keeper Alisson who has a reported hamstring injury so Giorgi Mamardashvili will come into the side.

The Reds are also missing long-term injury victims Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni, Wataru Endo and Conor Bradley but Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong should be fit to start.

Winger Federico Chiesa did not take part in Monday's training session.

Prediction

Liverpool have been far from convincing on their recent travels in the Premier League and they should be opposed in Tuesday's first leg against Galatasaray.

The Reds lost 2-1 at bottom club Wolves in the league last week before beating the same opponents 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round.

Liverpool's previous five away results in the English top flight were draws at Fulham and Arsenal, a dramatic 3-2 loss at Bournemouth and scrappy 1-0 wins at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest.

Galatasaray know the importance of making the most of home advantage as they almost blew a 5-2 first-leg lead against play-off opponents Juventus.

As that scoreline suggests, the hosts have some serious attacking firepower with Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen likely to start in front of Noa Lang and Baris Yilmaz.

Former Manchester City man Leroy Sane is another option on the wing and Osimhen's penalty gave Galatasaray a 1-0 win over Liverpool in September.

They are tough to beat on their own patch, losing only one home game this season, and should be full of confidence after a 1-0 win at Super Lig rivals Besiktas on Saturday.

Osimhen, again, was Galatasaray's goalscoring hero but the league leaders also showcased their defensive qualities, closing out a vital victory despite Sane's 62nd-minute red card.

Liverpool are worthy favourites to progress to the quarter-finals but they may not take charge of the tie until the second leg at Anfield.
