Club Brugge secured a place in the Champions League play-offs by a point and welcome Atletico Madrid to the Jan Breydel Stadium for the first leg of this tie.

Diego Simeone’s men missed out on an automatic place in the last 16 after drawing with Galatasaray and then losing at home to Bodo/Glimt in their final two league phase matches.

Team news

For the hosts Lynnt Audoor is a doubt with a muscle issue, while Cisse Sandra, Ludovit Reis and Jorne Spileers could all miss the game through illness.

Back-up goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel is out with a leg injury.

Atletico midfielder Pablo Barrios is sidelined with a muscle problem, while five players, including Robin Le Normand, are walking a disciplinary tightrope and will miss the second leg if they are booked in Belgium.

The stats

Brugge and Atletico have faced each other eight times in UEFA competitions, claiming three victories each.

The Belgian team have won both of their previous two-legged European clashes with Atleti, back in 1978 and 1992.

Atletico have not won any of their four matches away to Brugge in UEFA competitions, losing three and drawing one.

Simeone's side are in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the eleventh time in the last 13 seasons.

Prediction

Brugge have the upper hand when facing Atletico at home in Europe, with the Belgian side unbeaten in four matches.

However, Simeone's side will be determined to get a first victory in order to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Blue-Black have earned some impressive results this season, beating both Monaco and Marseille by three goals, while also winning 4-1 at Kairat Almaty last month.

Atleti, meanwhile, suffered a home defeat by Bodo/Glimt in their last Champions League game and have struggled for consistency in 2026.

Beating Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa Del Rey last Thursday will have given the side a great deal of confidence, although it was followed up by a 3-0 La Liga defeat to struggling Rayo Vallecano.

Despite being far from perfect, the visitors should have the quality to get the better of Brugge even away from home.

Backing over 2.5 goals could prove a smart move as five of Brugge's last six matches have featured three goals or more.

Five of Atleti's seven previous games have also seen three or more goals, so fans on Wednesday could be set for plenty of action at both ends of the pitch.
