In response to Thuram's brilliance! A fiery message from Mbappé lights up the Champions League opener
The Bernabéu summit heats up 24 hours before kick-off
This was no throwaway line beneath an Instagram photo. It was a declaration of footballing war in a purely French tone, lit by Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe.
The France international set social media alight with a short, direct message aimed at his compatriot and friend Marcus Thuram, the Inter Milan forward, less than 24 hours before the two sides collide in their opening Champions League clash.
The opening spark: from Napoli to Madrid
It all began at the Giuseppe Meazza. There, Thuram dragged Inter Milan through a mad comeback against Napoli in the standout fixture of the Italian league's third round, a 3-2 win for the Nerazzurri.
Introduced at the start of the second half with the game goalless, the French forward became the hero of the night. Napoli surged two goals ahead through Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund. Captain Lautaro Martinez pulled one back (56), Thuram levelled it (82), and Lautaro struck again to snatch the killer winner (90+1).
Thuram celebrated the result and posted photos from the match on his Instagram account. The response from Madrid came fast.
A three-word message that carries everything
Down in the comments, Kylian Mbappe left just two words: "Strong. See you Tuesday".
Two words were enough to set tongues wagging. "Strong" was an open nod to the brilliance of his France team-mate. "See you Tuesday" was an elegant sporting threat that the friendship would end at the first whistle inside the Santiago Bernabeu.
Fans of both clubs pounced on the message, many reading it as the prelude to a French-French battle inside a Spanish-Italian one.
