Champions League Wednesday Round-Up: Barca Annihilate Newcastle, Liverpool Thrash Galatasaray, First-Leg Leads Enough for Atleti and Bayern

The line-up for the Champions League quarter-finals is complete, with four more sides booking their place on Wednesday night.
Here’s how Wednesday’s four last-16 second-leg encounters panned out, including the pick of the stats on a night which saw no fewer than 23 goals at an average of more than five per game.
Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (8-3 on Aggregate)
Barcelona hammered Newcastle in the joint fourth highest-scoring Champions League game of all time, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski both bagging braces.
Anthony Elanga twice had Newcastle level on the night and in the tie, but the LaLiga leaders asserted their superiority and found the net with more than half of their shots on target (7/13).
Also on the scoresheet for Barcelona was Lamine Yamal, who, a week short of his 19th birthday, became the youngest player to reach 10 Champions League goals, surpassing Kylian Mbappe.
Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (4-1 on Aggregate)
Liverpool overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to run out comprehensive winners against Galatasaray and beat the Turkish side for only the second time in seven attempts.
Arne Slot’s Reds well and truly dominated, out-shooting the visitors 32-4 at Anfield and amassing a whopping 4.88 expected goals (xG).
Having seen his first-half penalty saved by Ugurcan Cakir, Mohamed Salah rounded off the victory with his 10th goal of the season – the Egyptian becoming the first African player to find the net 50 times in the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Atletico Madrid (5-7 on Aggregate)
Tottenham got their first win under Igor Tudor but still exited the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid, who had done the damage with their 5-2 first-leg victory.
Xavi Simons bagged a brace for his first goals since early December, but Atletico were always at least two goals ahead on aggregate – Julian Alvarez repeating his trick from the first leg of a goal and an assist, with David Hancko also registering.
Atleti are through to the quarter-finals for the eighth time in 13 Champions League campaigns under Diego Simeone; Spurs have still yet to advance beyond the last 16 since finishing as runners up seven years ago.
Bayern Munich 4-1 Atalanta (10-2 on Aggregate)
Bayern now boast three of the seven biggest aggregate wins in Champions League history, having equalled their 10-2 demolition of Arsenal in the 2016/17 last 16.
Already 6-1 up from the first leg, the Bundesliga leaders could have gone through this clash in cruise control – but they were always likely to put on a show, and that they did.
Goals for Harry Kane either side of half-time extended the England captain’s career-best return in all competitions to 47 for the season – and put him level with Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah in the all-time Champions League scoring charts with 50.
