The biggest night in North London since 2006
There is no overstating what tonight represents for Arsenal Football Club. Twenty years after they last stood on the brink of a European Cup final — losing to Barcelona in Paris — Mikel Arteta's side have another chance to reach the pinnacle of club football. Standing in their way is one of the most battle-hardened outfits in the competition's history: Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid.
The first leg in Madrid last week produced a tense, evenly-contested 1-1 draw that was largely defined by penalty decisions. Viktor Gyökeres gave Arsenal the lead from the spot just before half-time, before Julián Álvarez equalised ten minutes into the second half. The Gunners felt hard done by at the end when a late penalty appeal for a foul on Eberechi Eze was overturned on VAR review — a decision that left Arteta visibly furious.
The aggregate score is level. Tonight's winner goes to the final in Budapest on 30 May, where either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich will be waiting.
Why Arsenal are favourites
The numbers strongly favour the home side. Arsenal have been the most defensively sound team in this season's Champions League, conceding at a rate of just 0.65 goals per game under Arteta — the lowest ratio of any manager with 20 or more games in the competition. They have gone unbeaten in all 13 of their Champions League fixtures this term, and a win or draw tonight would set a new club record of 14 consecutive matches without defeat in European football.
History is also on their side at this ground. Arsenal have lost just one of their last 11 UEFA home games against Spanish clubs, and Atlético's away record in England is dire — they have lost six of their last seven Champions League visits to Premier League grounds, including a 4-0 thumping at this very stadium earlier in this campaign.
Bukayo Saka's return from injury has revitalised Arsenal's attack at exactly the right moment. The winger got 45 sharp minutes into his legs against Fulham on Saturday, while Gyökeres grabbed a brace to head into tonight in excellent form and full confidence.
Don't write off Atlético
For all the optimism around Arsenal, Simeone's side are far from passengers. Atlético have scored in 12 consecutive Champions League matches and bring impressive semi-final pedigree — they have progressed from six of their last seven semi-final ties across UEFA competitions. Their squad is also largely fit, with Álvarez, Giuliano Simeone, Alexander Sørloth and José Giménez all available after injury concerns earlier in the week.
Álvarez himself is in the form of his life. The Argentine forward made Champions League history in the first leg, becoming the quickest Argentine to reach 25 goals in the competition — doing so in 41 games, one fewer than Lionel Messi needed. With rumours linking him to Arsenal and Barcelona during the summer, tonight carries an intriguing subplot beyond the scoreline.
The tactical battle will also be fascinating. Atlético's ties in this competition have tended to be high-scoring and open, while Arsenal have been controlled and measured. Whichever rhythm prevails — frenetic or composed — will likely be the deciding factor.
Team news
Arsenal will be without Jurriën Timber (groin) and Mikel Merino (foot surgery), while Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard are both doubts but could feature. The core of David Raya, William Saliba, Gabriel, Declan Rice, Saka and Gyökeres is expected to remain intact.
For Atlético, only Pablo Barrios and Nico González (both thigh) are confirmed absentees from the travelling squad. Álvarez starts, as does Diego Simeone's son Giuliano, who has been a key figure in the latter stages of this campaign.

Our take: what to expect tonight
Arsenal have too much going for them to be beaten at the Emirates. Home advantage, superior recent form, a fully motivated crowd, and Atlético's dreadful record on English soil all point one way. The bigger question is whether Arsenal can avoid the cautious, leg-tired performance that occasionally creeps into high-stakes second legs — and whether Gyökeres and Saka can impose themselves early before Simeone's side dig in.
