5 talking points from Aston Villa Champions League victory over Club Brugge

Aston Villa picked up their first win of the season in any competition as they beat Club Brugge on Tuesday night, and there were some standout performances.

The Villans scored their first goals since Brian Madjo's strike in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain in August, all in the first half, through John McGinn, Emi Buendia and Nicolas Jackson.

With Villa turning Brugge over 3-2, here are five talking points from the Champions League victory.

John McGinn

McGinn's strike in the 11th minute was the first scored by any player in the Champions League proper this season.

The Scot - who last season become only the second Villan to lift a European trophy - curled round the defence to find the bottom corner of the Brugge goal.

In doing so, he became Villa's all-time leading goalscorer in major European competitions, with 12 strikes.

George Hemmings

Academy graduate Hemmings has been ever-present in Villa's side this season, the 19-year-old winger starting every game of the campaign, and he played the full 90 against Brugge.

There is already a sense that the teen can cement himself in Unai Emery's plans, with the boss loving his attributes and growing confidence.

Hemmings created one chance and had one on target against Brugge. Villa fan and broadcaster Dan Bardell feels the winger will 'go up a level and completely thrive' once he gets his first senior goal.

On the evidence of his performance against European competition, he is not far away from that.

Nicolas Jackson

New Villa striker Jackson got his first goal in new colours against Brugge, making a good run through the middle of the defence which allowed him to burst through and receive the ball to tap it home.

Those sprints are a large part of his game, and stats show he's on track to cover similar distances per game than the man he's replaced in the Villa attack, Ollie Watkins - ideal given the Englishman scored over 100 goals for the club.

Emery wants Jackson to stay away from the ball and be a threat on the shoulder of the defence, and he was able to score his first goal by doing that.

Zion Suzuki

New Villa goalkeeper Suzuki was one of the club's Champions League debutants in the victory, and he continues to impress after replacing Emi Martinez.

The Japan international became the first goalkeeper from his nation to play in the elite European competition, and made five saves on debut.

His range of passing has been the main talking point in his game, though, with a lot of compliments thrown Suzuki's way due to his fantastic distribution.

He made five accurate long balls, and is as comfortable passing between the lines as he is spreading the ball out wide, allowing Villa to start attacks from different areas.

The other new signings

Villa were known to be without new midfielders Johan Manzambi and Leon Goretzka on Tuesday night, with the Swiss midfielder potentially gearing up for Saturday's visit of Nottingham Forest, but Goretzka out until after September's international break.

But only four of Villa's 11 new signings played a part against Brugge.

Matteo Ruggeri, Alejandro Garnacho and Ibrahim Mbaye were all resigned to the bench, with none of the trio being introduced.

Garnacho has struggled to stamp his authority in his appearances from the bench so far, while Ian Maatsen is preferred to Ruggeri at left-back currently.

There is a lot of excitement about Mbaye, though, with the teen joining late in the summer from PSG. He's yet to play a minute, having been on the bench for the last two games, though it's said he's part of patterns of play in training with Manzambi and Jackson.

Emery will not want to unleash the trio together until he feels they have gelled - a stance he regularly takes with new signings.
