Dortmund, the reigning German champions at the time, started their title defense with a 3-1 home win and eventually, went on to retain their crown.
You have to go all the way back to 1984 for the rivals competing the opening fixture of their league seasons, with Hamburg pulling off a 2-1 win away to Dortmund on that occasion.
