Mika Baur reveals brilliant plan for historic Germany shirt after becoming 1,000th player
Celtic midfielder Mika Baur has described his Germany debut as “surreal” after becoming the 1,000th player to represent his country at senior level.
The 22-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Jurgen Klopp’s latest squad but was handed his first cap from the bench during Germany’s 2-0 Nations League victory over Serbia in Munich.
It represents another major step in Baur’s rapid rise since Celtic paid around £7million to sign him from Paderborn in the summer.
He has been virtually ever-present for Martin O’Neill since arriving in Glasgow and his performances have now earned recognition on the international stage.
Speaking after the game, Baur told the German media: “It still felt surreal even after the final whistle. My pulse was high, but then it was fine as soon as I stepped onto the field.
“The team was truly incredible from the first to the last minute. Especially those attributes we discussed: this counter-pressing and being tenacious – and yet combined with fantastic players in the team who can play amazing football. I think today was a highlight for everyone.”
Baur also revealed Klopp had some words of encouragement for him before sending him on for his historic debut.
He said: “Very, very positive words. It felt good. What he said exactly is staying between us, but you can imagine, he jokingly mentioned who would be the 1000th.”
He continued on playing under the legendary ex-Liverpool boss: “Indescribable. He has a certain aura. I think I said it two days ago, I only know most of the guys from the TV – him as well!
“I met him personally two days ago… just a great personality and a super coach who really gives you a lot, especially when you’re perhaps a bit nervous. He takes that away, and then you’re ready. That helps tremendously.”
On what he will do with his jersey, he said finally: “It’s going to my parents. It’ll be framed, I think. My mum will definitely find a spot for it!”
