German media give Joey Veerman similar ratings after his debut for Borussia Dortmund
Joey Veerman made his Borussia Dortmund debut on Saturday night, coming on for the final half hour of the German Super Cup against Bayern Munich in a 1-2 defeat. The German media gave mixed verdicts afterwards.
He started on the bench and came on in the 63rd minute. The midfielder, who joined from PSV, replaced Felix Nmecha. Not every German outlet handed Veerman a rating because he only played for half an hour, but a few did offer an assessment.
SPOX were one of them. They gave Veerman a 3.5. In Germany, 1 is the highest possible rating and 6 the lowest. "Another new arrival and debutant. He replaced Nmecha. Not especially noticeable," was SPOX's brief explanation.
At Sport.de, Veerman got a 4. "He was expected to reshape the passing in the centre, but still showed some issues with coordination in combination with his new team-mates. He is not yet the playmaker who dictates matters in midfield."
Meanwhile, local outlet RUHR24 wrote: "After coming on, the Dutchman did not stand out in any particular way - neither positively nor negatively. Even so, it was immediately clear that the new arrival wanted to bring structure to the play." Veerman received a 3 from the outlet.
Usually, the German Super Cup is played between the league champions and the DFB-Pokal winners. Because Bayern won both trophies last season, last season's Bundesliga runners-up Dortmund were also allowed to take part.
By half-time Bayern were already 0-2 up through goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise. Fábio Silva pulled one back in the second half, but it was not enough. Bayern won the trophy for the 12th time in the club's history.
