He once failed to make the breakthrough at Bayern Munich, but now Renato Sanches could apparently be set for a second attempt in the Bundesliga.

According to information from fussballtransfers, the 29-year-old midfielder is on Union Berlin's shortlist. The report says the Iron Ones want to make a move in the current window.

Sanches is still under contract at Paris Saint-Germain, but he no longer has any future in coach Luis Enrique's squad. Officially, his deal with the reigning Ligue 1 champions runs until 30 June 2027, but according to fussballtransfers, he has been cleared to leave on a free transfer this summer.

That means Union Berlin face plenty of competition. Ipswich Town, Hull City, Torino and clubs from Spain have also reportedly shown interest in the Portuguese midfielder. The player, meanwhile, is said to have already turned down approaches from the USA, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

Renato Sanches fails at Bayern Munich

The 2016 Golden Boy winner was once seen as one of the brightest midfield talents in the game, which is why Bayern Munich paid €35 million in the summer of 2016 to buy him out of his Benfica contract.

At Munich, though, the now 29-year-old never came close to meeting those expectations. In 2017, the German record champions sent him on loan to Swansea in the Premier League, before he joined Lille in 2019, with Bayern at least recouping a €20 million fee.

PSG then paid €15 million for Sanches in 2022, but in the French capital, just as at Bayern, he never moved beyond the role of a rotation player. After loan spells at Roma, Benfica and, most recently, Panathinaikos Athens, those in Paris now apparently seem to have seen enough.
