Bayern Munich unveiled their Champions League shirt for the new season on Thursday morning. In doing so, the Munich club are referencing the club's history.

The shirt has a dark purple base with bright red accents and features four watermark-style design elements that are not immediately recognisable. Bayern Munich described them as "iconic club moments" in a press release.

On very, very close inspection, the faint images show Franz Beckenbauer, Oliver Kahn's saved penalty from Mauricio Pellegrino in the 2001 Champions League title win against FC Valencia, Patrik Andersson's free-kick against Hamburger SV for the last-gasp title in the same year, as well as Arjen Robben's decisive goal in the 2013 top-flight triumph against Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern will wear the new shirt for the first time on Saturday in the Supercup against Borussia Dortmund (20.30).

Champions League shirt costs 100 euros without printing

Munich had already unveiled the red home shirt and the white away shirt some time ago, and had already worn both in various friendlies. Those two kits are plain-coloured and fairly traditional in appearance, but Munich have been more experimental with the Champions League shirt now on show.

Last season, the shirt for the top flight was still plain black. The price has not changed: for adults, the shirt costs 100 euros without printing, exactly the same as the other two shirts this season.

Following the Supercup, Munich begin the new Bundesliga season next Friday against VfB Stuttgart. Their first match in the top flight will then take place on 8, 9 or 10 September. The draw on 27 August will decide exactly when and against whom.
