Key statistics from the opening round of the Champions League: Torres shines and Llorente specialises
The first round of the league phase in the 2026-2027 UEFA Champions League season roared into life. The matches were packed with goals, big results and record-breaking figures, none more so than the brilliance of Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland, Michael Olise and Harry Kane.
Paris Saint-Germain claimed the biggest win of the round, thrashing Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester United also opened their campaigns in style, while Arsenal edged Napoli 1-0 and Liverpool saw off Atletico Madrid 2-1.
Real Madrid had to dig deep to beat Inter Milan 2-1. Manchester City, meanwhile, came away from Porto with a 2-0 victory.

Mbappé equals Raúl
Kylian Mbappé equalled Raúl's tally of 71 goals to move into fifth place on the list of the top scorers in the history of the UEFA Champions League. He sits behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 140 goals, Lionel Messi with 129, Robert Lewandowski with 109 and Karim Benzema with 90.
Against Inter Milan, Vinícius Júnior made 9 ball recoveries, his highest figure in a single Champions League match. No Real Madrid attacker had recovered more in a home game in the competition since Gonzalo Higuaín, who made 12 against Juventus in December 2008.
Thibaut Courtois, meanwhile, became the 56th player to reach 100 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
Mbappé and his brother's paradox
Ethan Mbappé saw the first red card of his career in all competitions during Lille's defeat to Real Betis, and it came in just his third Champions League appearance. His brother Kylian tells a different story. Across 99 matches in the competition, he hasn't been sent off once.
Bayern make history
Bayern Munich are the second team in UEFA Champions League history to break the 900-goal barrier. Only Real Madrid have gone further, racking up 1,139. Barcelona sit third on 767, with Manchester United fourth on 549.
Michael Olise has had a hand in 34 goals across all competitions in 2026, scoring 17 and setting up 17 more. Only one player in Europe's big five leagues can better him, and it happens to be his own teammate. Harry Kane leads the way with 39 contributions, having scored 34 and assisted 5.
The French star has now produced a fourth Champions League match in which he contributed to three or more goals. That equals Raphinha's record for the most such displays since Olise made his debut in the competition in September 2024.
Kane, meanwhile, has scored in eight consecutive Champions League matches, netting 10 goals in that run. One more scoring appearance would draw him level with the longest streak by a Bayern player, held by Robert Lewandowski, who scored in nine straight matches on two occasions between 2019 and 2021. Cristiano Ronaldo owns the competition record, finding the net in 11 consecutive matches between 2017 and 2018.
Top the list of goal contributors in the Champions League over the last three seasons, since the 2024-2025 campaign, and you'll find Kane's name. He has 31 contributions from 26 goals and 5 assists, edging out his nearest rivals Ousmane Dembélé and Raphinha by three. Both sit on 28.
Haaland equals Agüero
Erling Haaland has scored 59 goals in 59 Champions League matches, making him the player with the highest scoring rate in the competition's history, at a goal per game, among players who have played at least 20 matches.
That tally saw Haaland equal Sergio Aguero's record to become Manchester City's all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 36 goals for the club.
Yamal breaks records
Barcelona have scored 22 goals in their first 5 matches this season, making it the fourth-best goalscoring start in the club's history and their best since the 1950-1951 campaign.
Lamine Yamal has broken Lionel Messi's record to become the youngest player in Barcelona's history to reach 100 goal contributions. He got there at 19 years and 58 days, while Messi hit the mark at 22. Yamal now has 101 contributions for the club: 54 goals and 47 assists.
In the Champions League, Yamal has taken his tally to 12 goals, leaving him one short of Kylian Mbappé's record of 13 as the highest-scoring teenager in the competition's history. He has already surpassed Mbappé on contributions, though, with 23 to the Frenchman's 20.
Raphinha, meanwhile, has become the first Barcelona player this century to score in the team's opening 5 matches of a single season.
Manchester's numbers
Bruno Fernandes has scored 23 goals and provided 21 assists in European competitions since his Manchester United debut in 2020. No other midfielder can match his combined total over that period.
Sabah made history on their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League. They became the first team ever to start a match with 11 players of 11 different nationalities.
Matheus Cunha is the fourth Brazilian to score for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, following Anderson, Alex Telles and Casemiro. His first goal in the competition also marked the 241st scored by a different Brazilian in Champions League history, leaving Brazil second only to France on 242 scorers.
Patrick Dorgu became the youngest player to provide an assist on his UEFA Champions League debut for Manchester United since Wayne Rooney, who managed it aged 18 in September 2004.
Arsenal without set pieces
Arsenal have scored 10 goals in their first five matches this season, none of them from a set-piece. That's a striking shift for a side who leaned so heavily on dead-ball situations for their goals last term.
David Raya has kept clean sheets in 54% of his Champions League starts, 20 out of 37. No goalkeeper in the competition's history can better that ratio among those with at least 25 starts.
Against Napoli, Arsenal fired in 26 shots and racked up an expected goals tally of 4.05. Both figures are the club's highest in a Champions League match since the 2010-2011 season.
Martin Odegaard has also found the net in four of five matches across all competitions this season. He managed just one goal in 36 appearances for the club last season.
Liverpool's numbers
Andoni Iraola, meanwhile, claimed the first win of his career over Diego Simeone in all competitions, having previously lost three and drawn one against him.
Marcos Llorente has scored 5 goals in 5 matches against Liverpool. That's the same tally he managed across 54 games against every other opponent he has faced in the Champions League.
Paris shine
Paris Saint-Germain stretched their unbeaten run to 11 matches in the UEFA Champions League. They now sit just two games short of the longest streak in the club's history, set between October 2012 and November 2013.
Ferran Torres became the ninth Spanish player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League. He is also the first Spaniard to net three or more goals in a match with a team from outside the Spanish league since Lucas Pérez did it for Arsenal against Basel in December 2016.
That treble took Torres to 21 goals in the UEFA Champions League. He leapfrogged Luis Enrique "19 goals", Fernando Torres "20 goals" and Cesc Fàbregas "20 goals" to become the fifth-best Spanish scorer in the history of the Champions League/European Cup. Raúl tops the list with 71 goals.
Ousmane Dembélé, meanwhile, reached 30 goals in the UEFA Champions League. He moved past David Trezeguet to become the fifth-best French scorer in the competition's history, behind Karim Benzema with 90 goals, Kylian Mbappé with 71, Thierry Henry with 50 and Antoine Griezmann with 44.
Roma's return
Bryan Cristante finally broke his Champions League duck. It came on his 14th appearance in the competition across spells with Roma, Benfica and Milan. The goal carried extra weight too: it was Roma's first in the Champions League since Daniele De Rossi struck against Porto in the second leg of the 2018-2019 round of 16, a wait of 2,745 days.
Como's numbers
Como became just the second Serie A side to score four or more goals on their European Cup/Champions League debut. Sampdoria got there first, thrashing Rosenborg 5-0 back in September 1991. The win also made Como the 12th of 16 Italian clubs to have scored in the Champions League.
Nico Paz, 22 years and two days old, is now the youngest Argentine to register two or more assists in a single Champions League game. The last man to manage it was Lionel Messi, who did so against Basel in October 2008 aged 21 years and 120 days.
Pepé shines
Ricardo Pepi has a hand in something remarkable at PSV Eindhoven. The striker has contributed to 9 goals in the UEFA Champions League, scoring 6 and setting up 3. No player in the competition's history with at least 250 minutes can match his ratio: a goal or assist every 49 minutes.
Demirović hat-trick
Ermedin Demirović scored the fifth-fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, netting all three goals within 31 minutes and 21 seconds. He became just the second player from Bosnia and Herzegovina to bag a treble in the competition, following Edin Džeko's effort against Viktoria Plzeň in 2018. He is also the first player in Stuttgart's history to score a Champions League hat-trick.
Suzuki makes history
Zion Suzuki has become the first Japanese goalkeeper to feature in the UEFA Champions League. He had already broken new ground this season as the first Japanese goalkeeper to appear in the Premier League.
McGinn takes the lead
John McGinn has moved clear of Ollie Watkins as Aston Villa's all-time leading scorer in Europe's major competitions, taking his tally to 12 goals.
