Borussia Dortmund cantered into the second round of the 2026-27 DFB-Pokal following a convincing 5-0 win over HEBC on Tuesday.

Resultantly, the side were in the hat for the draw for the second round of the tournament on Saturday, conducted by former Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger in Dortmund.

Niko Kovac's side will play Werder Bremen at the Signal Iduna Park on 27 October 2026 in what seems like another winnable match for the Prussians.

At present, Dortmund are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with the River Islanders, winning five, whilst losing just once from their last 11 although that defeat did come on home turf: Bremen fought back from two goals down to prevail 3-2 with all three goals coming after the 88th minute in one of BVB's most shocking defeats in recent history.

This also marks their first meeting in the DFB-Pokal since 2020 when the sides clashed in the Round of 16. Interestingly, Bremen were on the winning side again, prevailing 3-2 at home to send Dortmund packing.

In 2019 too, the rivals were drawn to face in the Round of 16 and Bremen, once again, had prevailed, this time in a 7-5 penalty shootout win after playing out another pulsating 3-3 draw at the Westfalonstadion.

Speaking of the 2026-27 cup season, Bremen beat fifth-tier side LSK Hansa 3-0 in the first round. Jens Stage opened the scoring after 11 minutes before Niclas Fullkrug doubled their advantage from the penalty spot early into the restart. Ludovit Reis then added gloss to the scoreline with a third in 73rd minute as Die Grün-Weißen were back in the second round for the first time since 2024.

Their Bundesliga campaign began on a completely different note though, with Freiburg dealing them a crushing 4-1 defeat on matchday one. But Bremen once again sprung a huge surprise at the weekend with a 3-1 defeat of RB Leipzig on the back of a dominant display for their first top-flight win of the season.

Dortmund won't be taking them lightly. They'd come to know the side's potential when the rivals meet in the league a few days prior to their cup encounter, and that is scheduled to take place in Dortmund too.

The last time Die Borrussen lost out in the second round of the German Cup was in the 2024-25 season, when VfL Wolfsburg beat them 1-0 in extra-time at the Westfalonstadion.
