Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich: 3 questions for BVB ahead of German Supercup
Borussia Dortmund take on Bayern Munich in the 2026 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday as the Der Klassiker rivals ring in the 2026-27 season with a crackling showdown at the Signal Iduna Park.
The match has a lot at stake, with head coach Niko Kovac aiming for his first piece of silverware with the BVB, who haven't lifted a trophy since 2021, while Vincent Kompany and co. are looking to win a third title of the 2026 calendar year after the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in May.
Both teams are also coming off a long preseason campaign of six games each. The BVB made a strong finish after beating Premier League champions Arsenal before a 2-2 comeback draw against Serie A giants AS Roma. Bayern shrug off opening day loss to win their next five, including a 2-1 win over Aston Villa followed by 3-1 defeat of RB Leipzig.
Off the field, Die Borussen were among the most active German clubs this summer with six new players added to the roster, including a few exciting ones such as Konstantinos Karetsas and Joey Veerman.
1) Can Guirassy break his Klassiker duck?
Since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2024, Serhou Guirassy has bagged an admirable 60 goals in all competitions. But not a single one of them was against Bayern Munich. Weirdly, the Guinean ace has drawn a blank in all four appearances against the Bavarians in the Der Klassiker so far. He's expected to lead the line for the BVB again tomorrow, and having netted against AS Roma in their last preseason match, it will be interesting to see if Guirassy finally gets one over Bayern.
2) Will Konstantelias make his debut?
While five of Dortmund's summer arrivals - Konstantinos Karetsas, Joey Veerman, Joane Gadou, Justin Lerma and Kaua Prates - are expected to feature tomorrow, questions remain over Giannis Konstantelias. The Greek was unveiled as BVB's newest signing just two days ago and the match might be too soon for him.
3) Can Dortmund end a five-year trophy drought?
Perhaps the biggest question facing Niko Kovac and co. is this. The manager was unable win any silverware in his first full season in-charge of the club despite a promising run after taking over in February 2024. But now with a massive squad rejig this summer, expectations will be high from Kovac to deliver as Dortmund aim to bring home their first silverware since 2021.
