Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich reflects on Germany’s poor performance against Greece

It has been a shaky start to Jurgen Klopp’s tenure as the new head coach of the German national team. After grabbing a point against the Netherlands, Germany succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Greece on Sunday. Bayern Munich had three players in Germany’s starting XI against Greece, while Serge Gnabry came off the bench later in the game.

Germany dominated the game by having 76% possession and 16 shots, but they only managed to accumulate an xG of 1.27. Greece got the rub of the green as a deflected shot from Dimitrios Kourbelis managed to beat Alexander Nubel in the 74th minute.

The German team tried their best to get the equaliser. Greece defended resolutely to see out the victory. Germany certainly didn’t deserve to lose, but Klopp’s men didn’t do enough to score and impose themselves on the opposition.

While talking to Sky Sports in Germany after the defeat against Greece, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich insisted that his and the team’s performance was not up to the mark. The German midfielder admitted that he could have done better in the lead-up to the goal.

Kimmich agrees with Schweinsteiger’s assessment of the German National team

While talking to the media, Kimmich was also asked on Bastian Schweinsteiger calling the current squad as an ordinary team. The German midfielder admitted that it is a fair assessment as Germany has recently struggled to deliver consistent performances and results.

Germany has endured a run of difficult results since winning the World Cup in 2014. They have struggled in the big competitions under different coaches. Considering the pedigree of Jurgen Klopp, the likes of Schweinsteiger hopes that the German national team improves and competes with the best teams across the globe.

Klopp has also insisted that Germany are neither a too-good nor a too bad team at this point. There is a lot of work to do to help the national team reach the level they have shown in the past.

Germany still has time to make this a successful first international break of the season as they gear up for games against Serbia and Greece. They will play away from home in the second game against Greece on October 5. Bayern midfielder Tom Bischof will join the senior team for these two games after spending the first half of the international break with the U-21 squad. German fans will hope for a much better performance from the team in the remaining two games.
