  • France have six wins in their last seven games

  • Brazil lost six of their 18 World Cup qualifiers

  • Recommended bet: France to win

France came through their World Cup qualification campaign with ease as they claimed 16 points from a possible 18 and now they face a test in their bid for a third title with a friendly against Brazil at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Thursday.

The Selecao are the record five-time world champions but their last success came 24 years ago. This latest crop is very much a new-look team with Carlo Ancelotti in the hotseat, the first non-Brazilian head coach of their men's national team in modern history, and they endured a tough qualification process with six defeats in their 18 games.

Thursday’s fixture takes place on neutral territory in Massachusetts and it gives the teams a chance to compete in a venue that will be used in the upcoming World Cup, where it will be referred to as the Boston Stadium.

Team news

Ancelotti has selected what is a fairly experimental Brazil squad with six uncapped players, including Brentford striker Igor Thiago and Bournemouth teenager Rayan.

There are plenty of experienced heads in the Selecao side, however, such as captain Marquinhos and Casemiro.

Liverpool keeper Alisson and Chelsea youngster Estevao are among a number of notable absentees.

France have just one uncapped player in their squad as Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix is pushing for his first outing for Les Bleus.

Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise have all been called up by boss Didier Deschamps, while Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki will be hoping to add to his four caps.

Key defender William Saliba has not made the trip after pulling out of the squad due to injury.

The stats

Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Tunisia in their last game.

Brazil have two defeats in their last five games.

France have 11 wins in their last 15 games.

Les Bleus have scored at least twice in nine successive games.

France have won four of the last seven meetings between these sides stretching back to the 1998 World Cup final.

Prediction

France and Brazil are two of the favourites for World Cup 2026 outright glory but they have taken different approaches for this warm-up friendly.

The French squad is probably about as strong a selection as Deschamps could have made, while Ancelotti appears to have taken the opportunity to give a few players chances to impress.

Brazil also come into the game in mixed form with two defeats in their last five games, while France are flying as they are unbeaten in seven and have won six of those games.

Brazil lost a friendly game against Japan last year and were held to a draw by Tunisia. France are clearly a step or two up from the aforementioned pair and they look more than capable of winning this friendly.
