Luke Humphries looked cooked. Gerwyn Price was roaring, the doubles were disappearing and the World Grand Prix final appeared to be heading in one direction.
Then, suddenly, Cool Hand remembered exactly who he was.
Humphries battled back from 3-0 down to beat Price 6-4 in a ridiculous final at Leicester's Mattioli Arena, winning six of the final seven sets to claim his second World Grand Prix crown.
The victory also ended an increasingly irritating sequence for the Englishman, who had become rather too familiar with collecting runners-up prizes in major finals.
Humphries had finished second at the World Grand Prix, European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts in 2025, before suffering further final defeats at the World Masters and Premier League this year.
This time, he refused to let another trophy disappear.
Price had started like someone playing darts with the difficulty settings turned down. The Welshman posted a staggering 132.62 average in the opening set, completing it in only 34 darts for the best three-dart set average in World Grand Prix history.
At 3-0, Humphries was hanging on.
The turning point arrived in the fourth set, where he produced a 105 checkout in the deciding leg to avoid falling 4-0 behind. Suddenly, the temperature changed.
Humphries clawed his way back, moved 4-3 ahead and survived more Price pressure before taking control of the contest. A brilliant 10-dart break sealed the ninth set before Cool Hand finished the job.
The 6-4 victory earned Humphries the £150,000 top prize and made him only the fourth player to win the World Grand Prix more than once, adding the 2026 trophy to his 2023 success.
Price will be ruing another near miss. The Iceman has now finished runner-up in three major finals this year, following defeats to Luke Littler at the World Matchplay and Ross Smith at the World Series Finals. His last major title remains back in 2022.
Humphries finally has another big trophy to carry home, which after spending much of the night staring down the barrel of defeat probably weighs a little sweeter!
