India won the first ODI by six wickets to take a lead in the three-match series
England have lost five of their last seven one-day internationals
Joe Root scored 76 runs in defeat in the first ODI
Hard to oppose India in repeat attempt
India were no match for England in the T20 series, suffering a brutal 4-0 defeat, but they hit back in style to win the first of three one-day internationals.
India cruised to a six-wicket success at Edgbaston on Tuesday, forcing a collapse from England, who slipped from 61-0 to 107-6.
Joe Root and Liam Dawson put on a century stand to push England to a total of 258 but they were ultimately readily picked off.
The Men In Blue chased that down within 45.2 overs, with Shubman Gill retiring hurt on 80 and Axar Patel finishing on 52 not out to show his growing importance.
India were boosted by the inclusion of the legendary Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Gill at the top of the order while Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket and a catch to showcase his talents with the white-ball.
This India team looks finely balanced and England’s decision-making at times with the bat, something which is of a greater hindrance to them over 50 overs, can be questioned.
England have been beaten in five of their last seven one-day international matches, losing three times to New Zealand and once to Sri Lanka in that spell, and could prove vulnerable again with India having their confidence restored.

In-form Root poses England’s real threat
England have long been reliant on the services of Joe Root and his contribution of 76 runs from as many balls offered them a sprinkling of hope in Tuesday’s defeat.
It proved too low of a total to defend but Root, having had six fours and one maximum, looked in fine touch and could again be the hosts’ shining light at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.
Root is one of England’s greatest ever batters and a couple of T20 Blast appearances for Yorkshire may well have blown away the cobwebs.
The 35-year-old has averaged 46.35 runs in ODI matches against India and in his last four one-day appearances he has compiled run totals of 61, 75, 111 not out and 76 not out.
Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook will look to cause destruction at the top of the order whereas Root tends to play his way in during an innings and is far more accomplished than any of his teammates.
