Birmingham Phoenix take on Oval Invincibles at Edgbaston on Tuesday with pressure already mounting for the home side after they lost their first two games in The Hundred to sit second bottom of the standings.

Phoenix lost by six wickets first time out and were then thrashed by nine wickets in their second match.

After losing just two in the group stage last season before falling to a Super Five defeat in the Eliminator last year, a quick turnaround is needed if the Phoenix want to repeat their progress this time around.

However, a match against the in-form side of the competition in the Invincibles might be too big a challenge given the strength in depth that the two-time defending champions possess.

The Invincibles have made a perfect start, winning their opening two matches by margins of six wickets and nine wickets respectively.

On both occasions Will Jacks set the tone at the top of the order, blasting 61 from just 21 balls in the first game and adding a steady 24 from 24 deliveries in a modest chase of 80 in the second.

The 26-year-old's aggressive style is tailor-made for this format and, with a strong batting line-up behind him, he can attack from ball one, knowing he has the licence to play with complete freedom.

Team news

Despite a six-wicket defeat in their first match, Phoenix head coach Daniel Vettori and captain Liam Livingstone named an unchanged side for their clash with Southern Brave.

However, following a nine-wicket defeat in that match, the coach and captain have questions to answer ahead of the fixture against the Invincibles.

Phoenix have Tom Helm, Louis Kimber, Freddie McCann, Liam Patterson-White and Chris Wood in reserve and may look to their squad to bolster their chances.

With the Invincibles living up to their name, no changes are expected to their starting XI.

An impressive batting line-up boasting the likes of Jacks, Tawanda Muyeye, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran and Sam Billings is backed up by an impressive bowling attack, led by Saqib Mahmood, Rashid Khan and Jason Behrendorff.

The stats

Both sides reached the Eliminator stage last season, with the Phoenix bowing out at the first hurdle while the Invincibles — who topped the table by way of a superior net run rate over Birmingham — went on to win the final for the second year running.

This year, their starts have been very different. Birmingham have suffered heavy defeats in their opening two games, while the Invincibles have carried their momentum into the new campaign with convincing back-to-back wins.

Jacks has started his Hundred campaign with innings of 24 and 61 to top-score for the Invincibles in both matches.

In contrast, England's Ben Duckett has yet to hit his stride for the Phoenix having been dismissed for a two-ball duck against the Rockets before a labouring 20 off 21 balls against the Brave, an innings which included 15 dots.

Prediction

The Invincibles have been installed as heavy favourites for the victory after two impressive performances and they look more than capable of continuing that run in Birmingham.

There appears to be little by way of weakness in their side with a deep batting line-up and exciting bowling resources at their disposal.

Jacks' 61 off 26 balls has been one of the innings of the tournament to date, with 52 of those runs coming from 12 boundary shots.

The England international also saw his side home with a more modest 24 off 24 balls when chasing 80 in their tournament opener.

With the Invincibles looking so strong, backing one of their openers looks like a wise choice.
