Fresh off a T20 World Cup triumph, Hardik Pandya will rally his Mumbai Indians side hungry for an unprecedented sixth IPL title.
It began in typical MI fashion last season, with just the solitary win from the first five. That was then followed up with six wins on the bounce. And once the team grasped an unassailable momentum they ever so often do in the business end of seasons, they looked impenetrable until runners up Punjab Kings stopped them in their tracks.
A second qualifier exit meant that a campaign that began with despair finished on a fairly successful note. But for a team capable of taking down many an international T20 sides, no trophy in six years highlights an underachievement, perhaps.

Pedigree peppered all round MI's ranks
Current T20 World Cup-winning skipper. 2024's triumphant skipper. India's test team vice-captain. Mumbai Indians have it all. In a batting line up headlined by Rohit Sharma, Tilak Verma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, there are four world-class Indian stars forming the nucleus.
The amount of flexibility that gives MI is enviable. They could walk in with two all rounders, or the spin of Mitchell Santner, alongside the evergreen Trent Boult.
Every single player in the XI is a game-changer on his day.
Wrist spin resources limited for MI
And there would have to be a nitpick exercise to discover MI's weakness. Be it an explosive top order packed with experience, or two uncapped starlets in Naman Dhir and Ashwani Kumar, the MI ranks represent a harmonious orchestra.
Allah Ghazanfar, 20, is one player they have shown immense faith in. Despite his injury last season, they retained the mystery spinner. Santner, meanwhile, is on top of his game with both bat and ball.
However, MI lack the tactical freedom to explore their domestic leg-spinners. Karn Sharma and Vignesh Puthur were brilliant in patches last season, and this edition sees the return of Mayank Markhande. Whether he is a bankable option for majority of the season should MI require to tinker with their composition, remains a question.
Will Jacks to continue sparkling in his new-found T20 role
Speaking of spinners, Will Jacks has developed himself into a genuine allrounder who bloods revolutions into the ball and makes life tricky for left handers.
In a new role at number seven, the Surrey all-rounder chipped in with cameos of 39* (18), 53* (22), 21 (14) and 32* (18), sweeping a record-equaling four player of the match awards at the World Cup as England made the semifinals.
His dual capability and presence at the backend of an innings could torment opponents further, and in turn bolster MI's chances of winning tight contests.
