Ajinkya Rahane's revamped Kolkata Knight Riders will return in IPL 2026 to reclaim lost glory from their triumphant 2024 term.
After reclaiming their third title, after a long wait of 10 years, KKR slumped to eighth place last year in a season marred by inconsistency across departments and a lengthy batting unit that never got going.
It led to an imbalance, which had to be solved by releasing Venkatesh Iyer. KKR are a legacy-based team that reward loyalty. Manish Pandey continues to serve their squad with all his experience at the age of 36, and as recently as earlier this week, they retired jersey number 12 to honor one of their greatest ever players, Andre Russell.
It was punctuated when they rather emotionally bought back Venkatesh Iyer in the 2025 mega auction for a staggering INR 23.75 Cr. His form summed up KKR's season - plenty of attention and pedigree, but a ship that never sailed smoothly.

Team in search of stability
In fact, their ship needed complete refurbishment. KKR eventually went on to release Iyer - who now plays for RCB - and parted ways with Russell.
Having entered the mini auction with 13 slots to fill and INR 64.30 Cr in the kitty, it was no surprised when they broke the bank for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green (INR 25.20 Cr).
They added Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman to their bowling attack. The latter was asked to be released due to growing geo-political tensions between India and Bangladesh.
The likes of Russell, along with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, have been mainstays in the KKR setup for years. But the team's recent exploits suggest that there has been a seismic shift towards forming a new nucleus of the squad.
Putting the pieces together with the bat
One of the problems they had to address was the opening combination. Narine couldn't follow up his 488-run season of 2024 at the top of the order. He was partnered with skipper Rahane last season during the early stages, but surprisingly, the three-time winners couldn't muster a single 50-plus run stand before losing their first wicket.
How did they solve that? By roping in three exciting New Zealanders. Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra complete a solid top order. The former sent shockwaves across the circuit in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup when he ransacked 100* of merely 33 deliveries in the semi-final, on what is going to be his home patch for the next two months.
Allen is cast in the same mold as Phil Salt. He hardly defends a ball and can accumulate massive runs in the powerplay overs more often than not.
Another aspect of KKR's struggles last season was too many batters stuffed into awkward positions. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, an opener by trade, was seen batting at number five. KKR's superman, Rinku Singh, faced 134 deliveries all season. The year before that, he faced 7.53 balls per innings. It's a sorry stat for a player who averages close to 60 in first-class cricket.
Ramandeep Singh was a finisher slotted at number nine, while the age-old problem on typecasting Andre Russell to a basher's role in the slog overs further disrupted the balance.
KKR have all the ingredients to cross the 200 figure as often as some of the other heavy-hitting sides in the competition. They simply have to put the pieces of the puzzle in the right order.
Injuries galore could haunt KKR
While their batting could be as good as anyone else's, their bowling department has suffered a couple of massive blows.
Harshit Rana, now slated as the team's senior fast bowler, is ruled out for the entire season after having missed the T20 WC already. He has been replaced by Navdeep Saini.
To make matters worse, Matheesha Pathirana (INR 18 Cr) is yet to receive the No Objection Certificate (NOC). Mustafizur's replacement Blessing Muzarabani could deputize as the overseas pacer until Pathirana returns.
"The latest update is that he is with the Sri Lankan cricket board for his rehab, Somewhere mid-April is when they feel he'll be match fit," was the latest update by head coach Abhishek Nayar.
And finally, Akash Deep has been ruled out due to a lumbar stress injury. Left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey has been signed in his place.
KKR's spin duo would have to apply the chokehold and do the bulk of the lifting once again. If their bowling holds its own, their batting has the acumen to take them back into the top half of the ladder.
