A huge statement has been made by Victoria in the last few days, defeating an extremely strong New South Wales side by 300 runs. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Victoria made the most of conditions to post 382 in their first innings. Peter Handscomb led the way with 104, but he was well supported as four other batters made 45 or more. Starc and Lyon took four wickets each with the ball. The Blues' innings was the complete opposite, everyone struggled to gain momentum while the Victorian bowlers rolled through them. Steve Smith (57) continued his good pre-Ashes form but no other batter got to 20, they were all out for 128. With the pitch deteriorating on Day 3, a half-century from Marcus Harris helped the visitors scramble for runs before declaring. NSW needed 426 to win, but Victoria's bowlers made use of the conditions to wrap up the game in the last hour of play on Day 3. Steve Smith once again top scored with 56, while Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood left the ground due to injury concerns earlier in the day and did not bat. Peter Handscomb was adjudged the Player of the Match for setting up the win in the first innings, and Victoria will celebrate a powerful victory, continuing their perfect Sheffield Shield season.
