USSD Betting Explained: How to Bet Without Internet Access

What is USSD Betting?

You don’t need to have an internet connection to place bets at your preferred bookmaker in Uganda. With USSD betting, you can place a wager through your phone without an internet connection. 

USSD stands for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. It allows you to interact with a service through a short, text-based menu on a mobile phone. To use it, you must dial a specific short code, typically starting with an asterisk (*) and ending with a hash symbol (#). The menu appears on the screen, and you choose an option by entering its corresponding number.

Many Ugandans already know this system from using Mobile Money and basic banking services. It allows them to check their balance, send money, and complete other transactions without opening an app or needing an internet connection. Many betting operators use the same approach, allowing bettors to dial the site's USSD code to access their platform. Since the requests run through a GSM network, the service doesn’t rely on mobile data.

Although USSD lets you place bets much like a full betting site, the two options work through different interfaces. Instead of browsing pages and tapping buttons, you follow a series of prompts until you complete the process. It is one of several practical approaches covered in our Uganda betting strategy guides.

How to Place a Bet Via USSD

After creating an account with a betting operator that supports USSD, you can place a bet in just a few steps. You can compare operators in our guide to the best betting sites in Uganda. Follow the steps below.

1. Dial the Operator's Short Code: Enter the operator's USSD code on your mobile phone and press the call button to open the betting menu.

2. Follow the Numbered Menu: Once the menu opens, select your betting options by entering a numbered prompt. With the prompt, you can choose a sport, event and market. If available, you can enter a booking code for a pre-selected bet.

3. Review your Selection: Check your chosen event and markets to ensure that your selection matches the bet you intend to place before proceeding.

4. Enter your Stake: Enter and confirm the amount you want to wager when prompted.

5. Confirm your Bet: The operator may ask you to confirm your bet. Select the confirmation option to submit your wager.

6. Receive a Confirmation Message: After confirming your bet, you should receive an SMS with details containing your selections, stake and bet reference.

Depositing and Withdrawing via USSD

As with betting sites and apps, you can fund your account and withdraw money through a USSD code. The available options depend on the operator and your mobile network. To deposit money via USSD, follow these steps.

1. Dial the operator’s USSD code on your phone

2. From the numbered prompts, select “Payments,” “Deposit,” or “Fund Account”. 

3. Enter your betting user ID and the amount you want to deposit. 

4. Input your Mobile Money PIN to approve the transaction. 

Since most bookmakers allow depositing via MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money, the funds will move directly from your mobile wallet. Withdrawals generally follow a similar pattern to deposits.  If you want to remove your winnings after a successful bet, follow these steps.

1. Enter the bookmaker’s USSD code.

2. Select “Withdraw” from the menu. 

3. Input the amount you want to withdraw and confirm the request. 

4. The operator will send your winnings to the eligible mobile money account connected to your betting account.

Whether depositing or withdrawing, ensure you check the amount and account details carefully before confirming any transaction. Advantages of USSD Betting 

USSD betting is an alternative for placing a bet when you don't have reliable internet access. However, the benefits of betting with a USSD code go beyond that. Here are some of them.

• Works on Basic Phones: You don't need a smartphone to use this betting method. All you need is a simple, compatible phone that can make calls and access USSD service.

• No Data Cost: Rather than mobile data, USSD betting uses your mobile network. This lets you place bets without buying data.

• Reliable in Areas With Poor Internet Coverage: A poor data connection can make betting apps difficult to use. USSD is different because you only need a working mobile network.

• Quick Account Access: You can often perform basic betting and account functions without waiting for an app or website to load.

Limitations of USSD Betting 

Despite making betting accessible, USSD still has a few downsides. Here are some drawbacks to using USSD code for betting.

• Fewer Betting Markets: USSD menus usually cover a smaller range of markets compared to a full app or website. As a result, you may not find every market, league or bet type via USSD codes.

• No Live Match Visuals: If you enjoy watching the action unfold while placing in-play bets, you won’t fancy USSD betting. Unlike proper betting sites and apps, you cannot watch a live game via a USSD session. 

• Limited Statistics: Doing research before forecasting is an important part of sports betting. With USSD, you won't find detailed team stats, player data or other details that a full betting site will usually provide to help you make better betting choices. 

• Slower Navigation: Moving through several numbered menus can take longer than tapping through an app. It may also feel less convenient if you're unfamiliar with systems based on menus.

Responsible Gambling 

While USSD betting makes it easier to access betting services, that doesn't mean you should bet more casually. Approach it like you'll do on an app or website by setting a personal budget before you begin. Consider your spending and don't wager more than you can afford to lose. Also, track your stakes instead of relying only on your available mobile money balance. If betting stops feeling like an activity you can’t comfortably manage, ensure you take a break or opt in for self-exclusion.

Whether betting using USSD codes or betting apps, ensure your chosen operator is licensed by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB). This body oversees gambling in Uganda and provides the regulatory framework for licensed operators. In line with the Gambling Act 2018, you must be 25 years or older to bet via USSD code in Uganda.
