Zanzibar Football Betting: A Guide to the Island's Own League and Teams

How Zanzibari Football Fits Within Tanzania

Even though Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, it operates its own domestic football tournaments and leagues. This gives you lots of betting opportunities because apart from betting on football competitions in mainland Tanzania, you also get to bet on major club competitions and leagues in Zanzibar that are recognised across the country and Africa.

Football competitions and leagues on the island are organised by the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF), formerly known as the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA). This football association is independent of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), which organises tournaments in mainland Tanzania.

The ZFF manages competitions like the PBZ Zanzibar Premier League, which usually starts in September or late August and ends in May or June the following year, depending on the season. It also hosts domestic and regional cup competitions like the Zanzibari Cup, Mapinduzi Cup, Muungano Cup (Union Cup), and Nyerere Cup.

Remember, these Zanzibar leagues and club competitions follow schedules, standings, and club structures that are independent of mainland Tanzanian football. And since the island is part of Tanzania, key players from the PBZ Zanzibar Premier League and other domestic cups also represent the Tanzania national team, Taifa Stars, in FIFA competitions, including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations. That makes our Taifa Stars AFCON betting guide worth a read ahead of the 2027 tournament.

Still, Zanzibar has its own representative team, Zanzibar Heroes, that competes in regional tournaments and friendly matches. For example, Zanzibar Heroes regularly compete in CECAFA (Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations) tournaments, such as the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

The Island's Top Clubs

There are around 16 Zanzibari football clubs that compete in the Zanzibar Premier League, although there are hundreds of other local teams across the island. Here are the four best clubs you can bet on in major Zanzibari football tournaments like the PBZ Zanzibar Premier League.

Mlandege FC

This is one of the top teams you can bet on in Zanzibar football. The team has won eight Zanzibari Premier League titles, with the most recent victory in the 2024/2025 season after earning 62 points and beating KVZ FC on goal difference. This makes Mlandege FC one of the most competitive teams on the island. The team is based in Zanzibar City and plays many of its home matches at Amaan Stadium, the island's premier football venue.

Mlandege FC has also built a reputation for delivering high performances against top rivals and lower-ranked teams, and you'll often find it among the favourites in league fixtures. Still, you should always check its current form, injuries, and head-to-head records before backing this club in any fixture.

KMKM SC

KMKM (Kikosi Maalum cha Kuzuia Magendo Sports Club) has won the most Zanzibari Premier League titles (9) as of the time of writing. Like Mlandege FC, the club plays its home fixtures at Amaan Stadium, and it has one of the largest football fan bases in Zanzibar.

With a rich history spanning nearly six decades, KMKM has also established itself as one of Zanzibari football's most successful teams. The club's experience and winning culture have even made it a strong contender in continental competition. For example, in the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, it became the first Zanzibari club to reach the second preliminary round after beating Djibouti's AS Port 4-2. This makes this club a great team to bet on, especially when it’s playing against smaller teams.

JKU SC

JKU SC (Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi Sports Club) is another established Zanzibari football club and has established itself as one of the Zanzibar Premier League's most competitive underdogs. Like Mlandege and KMKM, JKU also plays most of its home matches at Amaan Stadium, and the team is well known for its organised style of play and disciplined defensive approach. This makes it a strong opponent for many favourites in Zanzibari football competitions.

What Makes Island Football Distinctive

If you’re used to betting on football matches in mainland Tanzania, you should note that Zanzibari football is a bit different, as it has its own domestic leagues and clubs. It has also developed a football environment that reflects its own identity, history, community, and traditions.

One major difference from mainland Tanzania football is the structure of competitions and games in Zanzibar. As we mentioned, Zanzibari football is managed by the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF), which manages different schedules, tournament structures, formats, and rules for different Zanzibari leagues and club competitions. These can differ significantly from mainland Tanzania football, where leagues and competitions are organised by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF). If you are used to the mainland game, our guide to betting on the mainland's Ligi Kuu Bara shows how the top flight works.

Another defining feature of Zanzibari football is local matchday culture. Football tournaments on the island are considered community events, with fans gathering to represent their neighbourhoods, institutions, and local identities. This makes even smaller domestic league fixtures highly competitive, offering great betting opportunities for keen bettors.

Rivalries also add a unique edge to Zanzibar football betting. When a fixture involves a top Zanzibari football club such as KMKM SC, Mlandege FC, or JKU SC, it can carry extra pressure because the team not only represents league position, but also pride, history, and local dominance. Such matches can produce competitive results as motivation and teams’ pressure often influence the performances of the teams.

So, when betting on Zanzibar football, you should focus on more than the team’s results. For instance, understanding Zanzibari football culture can help you evaluate fixtures and identify value bets.

Following and Betting on Zanzibari Football

There are no local betting sites exclusive for Zanzibar bettors that you can join at the time of writing. Instead, you can use mainland Tanzania and international bookmakers to bet on Zanzibari football.  Many football betting sites for Tanzanian bettors cover major Zanzibar leagues such as the PBZ Zanzibar Premier League (often listed as Tanzania Premier League Zanzibar on sportsbooks) and major regional cup tournaments where most Zanzibari football teams compete.

Also keep in mind that many betting sites may not offer an extensive selection of football betting markets like in larger African and international leagues. Still, you can bet on popular markets like Match Result, Both Teams to Score, Over/Under Goals, and Correct Score. If you’re looking for live betting and player-specific markets, they are often limited and sometimes unavailable, especially in lower-profile matches.

Keeping Track of the Season

When betting on Zanzibari football, we recommend that you check league schedules, fixtures, results, league tables, kick-offs, and other match data on the official Zanzibar football sites. This is because most sources online aren’t updated regularly, and you may end up missing out on a match you wanted to bet on by following an updated schedule or kick-offs.

The ZFF official website and its Football Management System (ZFMS) are the most reliable sources to use. These platforms publish official fixtures, competition information, and league updates as they get their information directly from league and competition organisers. Responsible Gambling

When betting on Zanzibar football, you should treat it as a form of entertainment, not a way to earn income or make profits. You must also be above 18 years of age to bet online in Zanzibar, which is the legal gambling age in Tanzania. And to make sure you’re betting safely, only use the money you can afford to lose when placing bets and set a budget, deposit limit, and wager limits to control your spending.

We also recommend that you use Tanzanian betting sites licensed and regulated by the Gaming Board of Tanzania. Such betting sites are safe and legal to use in Zanzibar. And in case you’re having gambling problems or struggling with betting habits, such as being unable to stop yourself from betting, free support and counselling are available in Tanzania. Just reach out to organisations like GamblingTherapy.org or the Gaming Board of Tanzania for help.
